Never played it but I have always wanted to. I really don't know where to find it. I've never seen it in stores or at abandonware sites. I haven't really ever looked that hard though.

This is excellent news. The original game was almost a legend, even though the combat system sucked

Back when I had a crummy thrift store 386, somebody got this game for me from...... a Thrift store! unfortunately, even though the manual made me drool, I was never able to play it because of the old manual warfare copy protection method. and I didn't have the star chart....

It's abandonware now. So you can pick it up at this link:

It never will be as good as the original, I hope it doesn't suck as SC3 did.

My favourite race had to be zoq-phot-pick (an enlightened but very, very, very naive race of birds) or the spathi (think of a cowardly clam armed with a howitzer) .

Oh wait, it's going to be more of a remake and it seems to involve the original designers. This could be worthwhile!

Badass! I hope to see several games follow this trend: All the Kings Quests, all the Space Quests, A few Monkey Islands, Ascendancy, Sam & Max Hit the Road...maybe even Daggerfall. I want to see a trend like this; something maybe developers do when they're at home and bored or something.

The Zoq-Fot-Pick (or something like that) are a bunch of plant-like beings. The birds you're thinking about are a relative of the Yehats (something like that), a member of the Alliance.

One word:

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

One of the Greatest Games Ever (TM).

And the naive, new-age spiritual birds were the Pkunk, old relatives of the Yehat.

The Zoq-Fot-Pik (3 species IIRC) were the race just inside Ur-Quan space that were constantly under attack. Their ships had that "stinger" weapon (kinda like a flamethrower) but you hardly ever got the chance to use it as the Dreadnoughts/Marauders blew you away before getting close.

The "enlightened" (read new-age on steroids - and other things ) birds were the Pkunk - a hated offshoot of the Yehat race.
Their ships were the fastest thing around and used psychic energy as a basis for their weapons - hence the insults the Pkunk pilots kept throwing around to keep themselves "worked up".

I think that thing was actually a tounge! Really powerful too,I could take down the Ur-Quan ships in the damn thing.

One of the thing that amazes me is how well the dialogue was done for each of the races. They all had a unique feel with real personality. I'm a little hesitant about the addition of voice acting (this will be based off the 3D0 version) to the game because it dissapointed me so much in SC3 (having to actually LISTEN to the Spathi regurgitate their entire script from SC2 was agnoy).

Maybe it's just me, but unless the voice acting is AAA material, it would generally ruin the game.

Personally I suck at melee (ship-to-ship combat), though a friend of mine is excellent.

Any clues on how to fly the ships better?

ravagon,

Yeah, they looked like plants though.

While we're on the subject, have you guys checked out the Star Control: Timewarp?

at: http://www.classicgaming.com/starcontrol/timewarp

it look along the same lines, and they say they already have a melee engine up.

That looks interesting. I wonder if any of the original designers are involved.

That does look pretty impressive.

[And I hope they can find a way to bring back the Androsynth. Being Orz fodder for an eternity isn't a nice way to go]

The SC jokes are quite good too. An extraction :-

Q: How many Spathi does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: None. They'll get the Hunam to do it for them...lightbulbs can be DANGEROUS.

Q: How many Supox does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: How many Humans does it take to change a lightbulb?

Q: How many Zoq, Fot and Pik does it take to change a lightbulb?
A:
"The Lightbulb is fine! It doesn't need to be changed!"

"What are you talking about? It's pitch black! Are you BLIND?"

"Oh, so it's MY fault you can't see into the upper ranges!"

"That doesn't matter, okay? We need to change it!"

"Do not!"

"Do too!"

"DO NOT!"

"DO TOO!"

What does a Spathi do when you tell him there's nothing to be afraid of?
Run away.
What does he do when you tell him something terrible is going to happen?
Freeze on the spot.
What does he do when you are silent?
Ask you if everything is safe and nothing terrible is going to happen.
