Ship Names
This idea was floated by a few people for Civ3 itself, but i wonder if anyone else thinks they should include this little cosmetic change.
It could work like this...
*Name Replaces Unit Type, or a hypen*
*Stats*
*Terrain*
And BTW, the automatic name for a ship could be a historical name, like "Enterprise" for America or "Yamato" for Japan, or they could use the city lists. People could of course custom and modify the names.

I think in PTW, we'll be able to rename elite units that produce leaders (so that's only land units sadly). Can anyone confirm this?

As I've said before, I think you'll be very pleased by the cool stuff that's been crammed into the forthcoming patch.

Hey Dan, you are such a TEASE sometimes!!!
Don't suppose you could drop us a few HINTS, or, at the least, let us know HOW forthcoming it is
Anyway, keep up the great work Dan!

I suggested this way back when...
Remember the old 'White Wolf Studios' game "Empire Deluxe'?
In that game, every completed unit, land sea or air, was given a random title based on its city.
So you'd get 101 Shurrupak Infantry, or 3rd Isandlwana Tank Guards Division.
And the slot was clickable, so you could rename them whatever you wanted (Emperor Seeker's Praetorian Guard for example)

After that tease Dan gave us I'll wait as long as necessary to get this patch. Unit naming will rock. Anything that helps the civer get more immersed in the game is good.

Also...
Could be great put a name to land areas (America, Europe, Gibraltar Straight, Atlantic Sea....) and that the owner of the land area of where the invisible pole is could change it (this should be an option avaible in the editor, for avoid Bananalands in an accurate scenario).
Also, this names could be used in negotiation "withdraw the troops that are near Sapporo, in Australia" for example (specially useful after the civ has created Sapporo, New Sapporo, Sapporo 2 and New Sapporo 2 ).

Hmm... Well, every time they've given straight answers about development projects which are then left out for whatever reason, they have been publicly declared to be servants of Hades. Since some childish losers refuse to be able to handle pre-release rumors, they have to do things like this.
So quit whining.

oh oh oh, and don't add any things that you cant delete, like HMS , or USS or IJN or whatever!
Actualy when i think of it, having them there as default would be good, but aslong as we can delete them!

Panag, nothing personal (your post simply suggest my note, as the last of many others) but I noticed this forum as the largest "make it an option" place around here
Sometime I bet I missed someone requesting for a game starting pop-up "Do you want to play? Yes, I bought the whole thing with that purpose/No, just clicking around my computer desktop to waste some minute"
(And I noticed that the autorun CD pop-up ask me to Install or Play the Game, but that doesn't count IMHO ).

I would be all for the "option" of labels, a la Sim City. That way, I can label geographic areas to help me when scanning around my empire. This feature could be toggled off when not needed, of course.

Yes, that's what I was thinking of also.
And to answer the initial question of this thread, there will be an option to name units with the next patch, either when they become elite, or through the editor.

New readme says you can rename units that generate a great leader, so it would appear that you can only rename land units without using the editor.

If they can add the code to 'name units that generated a great leader' how hard is it to make such a feature available to all units?????

Dida, I suppose that with common production rate it will be annoying to rename every unit produced to something worth it: sooner or later some player will ask to have a meaningful name assigned by default, then someone will complain about how historically (in)accurate the default names are, then someone will ask to have this function as an option because he/she's annoyed by the "name this unit" pop-up...
Ok, I'm sure you get it the potential mess
With my usual rat of a couple of Great Leader per game I'll have a nice opportunity to rename a unit as "Screaming Eagles", "Bande nere" or the like, without really slowing my game

I hope there's an options to make Veteran -> Elite units nameable also... I have bad luck and I don't get very many GLs.

I think just naming GL producing units is good, although I'd prefer naming Elite units too. But I also think naming your armies would be neat; ex: an army of Cavalry you could name RCMP.
However, with the amount of navy ships produced, it would be nice to name more modern naval vessels as well, with such historic names as Enterprise and Yomato, etc.
