Tonight I'll give it a try, otherwise maybe LaFayette the spylover or some other experienced player could enlighten us?

I seem to remind someone had a little problem (think was Rah) once, capturing an AI undefended city before settle his first and then he had no capital at all.
But, again, never heard of someone who destroyed the palace without taking the city...

Capital cities can never be bribed.
The Palace can never be sabotaged by diplomatic action.
Military force is the only way to capture a capital.

Not necessarily - an AI can lose its capital to barbs and then live in a capital less empire until conquered by the human player -- remember the AI always play at King and so is nowhere near as bothered by corruption etc as we are ...
SG[1]
but you can't destroy the Palace without capturing or destroying the city ... CC (again)

I'm not sure about that...I have played many games when an AI has moved its capital half a dozen times before 1AD. I had always assumed it wanted a central Palace city to reduce corruption...otherwise why bother?
ps - are you OK for Friday?

I think the reason why the AI moves the capital is because they don't have anything left to build. When it can't expand more, it has enough units and no more improvements left to build. The palace is the only thing left to build. So many cities start building the palace, and when they finish them, their capital is moved around with only a couple of turns in between. No tactics involved.

Yes - I'm fine for tonight (Boss permitting )
This presupposes the AI has Masonry - without it they cannot even start to build a Palace - for the militaristic civs Masonry is not a priority tech.
SG[1]
[Edited to correct civ tech modifier: Masonry has base value 4 increased to 5 for civilised civs and reduced to 3 for militaristic civs]

La Fayette, I haven't played recently so the answer is no. I'm playing a Japanese historical game (1560-1590) made by KOEI (which also produced "the romance of the three kingdoms", if you have heard of it). Need to follow exactly what happened in history in order for an event (military coup which killed the biggest warlord) to happen. So I'm doing some readings as well.

Heh. I did that against the Zulus not too long ago. Damn shame seeing that big, fat size 24 capital Zimbabwe suffer from "mysterious" bouts of severe water poisoning, thus losing people left and right.

When we were still using our NES boxes, we'd buy any KOEI game produced. Any of the Three Kingdom series. The G. Khan ones. There was a trading/exploring/fighting game on the High Seas. The pacific naval WWII games. Everyone was a great game.
(Our first exposure to CIV was on the NES box)

Yes, I was surprised when I saw Civ on a NES being played by a friend's 6 or 7 year old little brother a little while after Civ2 came out.

I have played that one, 'New Horizons'. It is still hot in China after this many years. I found the quickest way to earn a lot of money at the beginning -- if you get to the store in Tripoli at 2am and buy a tax waiver, then you can go to Istanbul and buy/sell wool to make instant money since the buying and selling prices are the same and when you buy the price goes up. I still has the game on my PC and I often sit there just to repeat this scheme for 1 hour and being very rich when it is only the 3rd month into the game!

SG[1]: This is the second one from a game series 'koukai' (Japanese: sailing the sea) so the official name is 'koukai 2' (now koukai 4 is the newest one of the series). It was available on both PC and video game system 'super nintendo' (SNES). The SNES version is in English but the PC one is in Japanese and there are Chinese and Korean version as well.
I don't think there is a English version for PC but you can send an e-mail and ask Koei. It's English name is either 'New Horizon' or 'Uncharted Water'.
Japanese website is www.koei.co.jp and they have a branch in US www.koeigames.com. A lot of games are only available in the Japanese website.

The 3rd of the series is in my point of view the best of the series. It came to China after the 4th for a political reason -- in the Japanese version you can trade slaves thus the game was banned in China until Koei removed slave trading (by far the most profitable commodity, after removing it some people suddenly did not know how to make money) in the Chinese version.
