Does UU match GA and head of state?
In some cases the unique unit and golden age of a civ does not match the historical timing of the head of state choosen in CIV3. In some cases there might be political reasons behind this, in other cases the greatest leader in a nations history were simply not timed with the golden age. Some examples:

Americans - Abe may be the greatest President they have had, but his timing was kinda opposite of a golden age - a civil war. The historically correct UU would then have been ironclad or some kind of riflemen. A leader to match the real American golden age and UU would have been Reagan or perhaps Kennedy.

Germans - They have had perhaps three golden ages under Bismark, Hitler and Kohl. UU could be some riflemen mod for Bismark, Panzer für den Führer, and modern Panzer (movement 4) for Kohl. The corrent UU is perhaps the best balance and who would like to play as Hitler anyway?

India - Ghandi using war elephants or doing war at all? Some unit with unique diplomatic abilities would have been a more correct.

China - Mao were more of a swimmer and walker than a rider. In his command he had millions of infantry or riflemen.

But why bother? It´s a good game!

Yeah why bother, considering the game is to rewrite history, not replay it.
