Trip's right. Why do you think voter turn out in America is less than 50%?

the polls were always within 5 points the whole time. that had no effect on voter turnout...

Elections are very delicate things. Mess with them at our peril.
With millions of voters... statistical significance comes into play. Evens out a lot of the bumps.
With 50 or 60 voters? Anomalies will be common. Anything that could effect the vote, other than the record, the campaign threads, and the existence of parties themselves should be stomped on.
You are right, you are free to do as you wish. We are free to do so also. The most severe punishment we mere mortals could dish out would be discommodation. That would be an almost never happen, but mucking with the elections might do it.

Actually, becuase of the fiasco in florida where news agencies kept switching beween a bush and gore victory, many people may not have voted. But you're right most americans are stupid and lazy. Most people don't vote because they think everyone else is doing it anyways so why bother. Before the last Presidential election the consensus was that Bush is a moron (which he is). Democrats didnt vote because they figured Bush had no chance of winning... I wasn't of age to vote yet, but thats why many of my friends and also my parents didn't. They're not exactly geniouses either though...

Given that there is a debate, I'll post another unofficial poll : "Should we ban unofficial opinion polls ?"
"- Group1 Yes, they should be absolutely banned
- Group1 Yes, for a time before the elections
- Group2 No, there should be opinion polls whenever we want."
This poll will make me prepare an amendment, if yes passes.
BTW, I'm sure opinions polls change elections. That's a well-known concept in political sociology, and it was shown last time in France (Jospin was too sure to be on 2nd round, and he didn't make any effort. Le Pen won the 1st round eventually).
