High Priestess in Space - Succession Game
First hard decision - which version - after much thought we selected MGE - sorry to anyone who only has 2.42 - (* cough * but it can be upgraded * cough *)
Map: 100x100 this is the largest non-giga map size; small land-mass, varied
Civilisation: Purple - that way we have no problem with high tech Purple civs or massive tech costs - we have chosen to play the Zealots.
Special Rules: There is only one more government change permitted and that MUST be to Fundamentalism at the first (oedo) opportunity or on the turn that SoL is completed - Victory MUST be by Spaceship - so don't kill the last guy standing!!!
4000 = It's hard to believe that this is a real genuine first effort random start - but it is. We can see two whales and we are one tech from Monarchy!!! - but we are probably on a smallish island (land-mass 37).
3950 = Stonehenge founded (two Whales) and a rather nice buffalo located.
3900 = Glastonbury founded on the Buffalo.
3700 = Monarchy -> Currency; Revolution;
3650 = Monarchy established, Mother Jezebel now leads the Zealots;
3400 = Currency -> Mysticism (Trade not offered);
3250 = Temple in Stonehenge
3100 = Men-an-Tol founded
3050 = Mysticism -> Pottery (Trade will be available next time unless we pop a useless tech) Lest anyone has any doubts - the Wonder in Stonehenge SHALL be the Gardens!!! (unless you want me (SG[1]) sulking for the next 4 thousand years!!!)
2750 = Pottery -> Trade;
2500 = that's our 30 (15 each) turns
We suggest that the next players take 15 turns for the first round and then 12 turns for a while.
First come first served, please post that you are on the game and take your turn.
Current order
is on the last page ...
The SGs - extraordinarily getting sozzled on Saturday
The zip file contains the current 2500BC save file and the original 4000BC start

SG: you should change your rule to two government changes instead of one, since you have already used one change to Monarchy. I can't commit to anything now but thanks for inviting me.

Gulp!
I shall download the 5 piece patch and, with anxiety, join the ranks of the brave and fundamental.

As it is MGE, I shall join the throngs of the religious and righteous! The heathens shall be damned to an eternity on this map while we fly to the heavens!

If there's still room, sign me up! And I shall practice the nuances of celebrating fundamentalists, as soon as I can convince myself that this isn't an oxymoron.

El Civ ascends to the throne while more qualified candidates are not paying attention. Surrounded by throngs who know he's never done this before, El Civ calms them by announcing, "We have nothing to fear but my inexperience and lack of particular knowledge!" The throngs murmur.
1700--Men-an-Tol builds settlers.
1650--no news to report
1600--Glastonbury builds settlers.
1550--Zealots become literate and decide they wish to make maps.
1500-Slim Buttes builds phalanx, as does Three Forks (rats! I should have re-named it Three Tenors).
1450-1300--no news to report, save for cities building things and settlers making roads and mining a hill outside Men-an-Tol.
1250--Machiavelli terms the Zealots the largest civ in the world and the Vikings undertake the Pyramids.
1200--The Chinese wish to keep up with the Jones (or the Canutes, perhaps) and undertake Pyramids also.
1150--Map Making is learned and out of work shipbuilders rejoice! Stonehenge sets right to work on Lighthouse while Glastonbury and Men-an-Tol rush caravans (food).
1100--Caravan form Glastonbury arrives at Stonehenge and cheers are heard.
1050-- Caravan from Men-an-Tol arrives and more cheers are heard. It turns out the cheering is for a streaker that has gained access to the palace courtyard, but gains are made to the wonder of the Lighthouse.
1000--The hill at Men-an-Tol is now mined, Lighthouse is very near completion and Glastonbury is busy building a Trieme. Population is 260,000 and we are 2nd among all civs in disease! Hoorah!
El Civ is frightened by the palace streaker and heads for the only hill in all of the Zealot's land, whereupon he is put to work in the mines.
Please let me know what I could've done better, what I didn't do and should have and the like.

This just in...
I forgot to state that I selected polytheism as the next advance of Zealot theologians. Also, since installing the MGE patch I have gotten some civ2.exe errors that shut down my game. I had to play my turn twice (for this game) as it happened during the first try. Hopefully this will not manifest itself as the game grown into longer turns per player. In case you are wondering, I used Cedric's patch to take me from 2.42 to MGE.

Thanks Hydey As the game progresses my weaknesses will show more. I'm not yet competent in the micro management and inner workings of Civ. That's the very reason I decided to play this game. I'll try not to be an anchor.

Cheat question
I've been busying myself in the Great Library and have a question. I read over Xin's game cheats and wish to know what is considered allowable and what is not, so I don't corrupt this game.
1. The "ZOC Avoidance Trick"
2. Airbases within city radius
3. Cost effective rush buying (i.e. incremental buying of units and improvements to lessen the overall cost)
4. Turbo settlers
I'm trying to improve my gameplay but not at the risk of mucking up this succession game. Thanks.

Airbases are generally considered a 'cheat' (not my opinion - but I was overruled by the community) the others are all OK

SG[1] & (2), as mentioned I'd like to join but - for this week - my home PC will be offline so, what I can do is only to stare amazed at my PC (in the office ) and join you all praising for the spaceship launch.
Btw... Airbases?
We really will have airbases?
Naaaaa, I don't believe...
Mr. Niccolò the Heretic (and since I'm an heretic I'll not come down from the mountains, I fear to be burned or whatever by the "enlightened").
building (for being more enlightened) the Lighthouse would be appreciate.
From the top of the mountain, truly yours,
Mr. N.

My home pc has been acting stragely of late. Put me on the list of players, but skip my first turn. I plan to reinstall my operating system to cure the computer's woes. If that doesn't work, I could be in trouble...

As there are already many players and as I am already "engaged" in 5 other, I don't feel able to play this one.
But I will watch carefuly
I see it as a monster with 200 little cities producing each 2 beakers
Estimated time to make a turn by 1750 ad : 5 hours, not including the nervous breakdown
But please don't run away, I may be wrong

Alas my PC must be in communication with that of Marquis. In addition to the program error ("Civ2.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows") my PC is now sometimes simply re-booting itself while Civ is running. I can scarcely play for 15-20 minutes before it happens. I hope to get it fixed by my next turn, even if it means a clean wipe and a reinstallation.

1000: After nearly 3000 years stuck lighting candles and washing the High Priestess's unmentionables in holy water, STYOM rises to the role of Space Advisor. 'Brothas and Sistas, we need a rocketship!', he cries.
*blank looks all around*
In the meantime the Lighthouse will at least let us get a little closer to the stars...
Goals: Get some land somewhere else and build on it. More cities.
Another wonder after LH - Colossus or MPE? tough one there.
Plans are mooted for a deliciously sleazy city at the northern tip of our tiny island. STYOM likes our build orders except for the Barracks in Three Forks - probably we would do better to have a Settler, Camel or some kind of unit to explore, at this stage of the game. Not wanting to give up the shields, we switch to a Temple for now.
975: *racks brain to remember whether blackclicking is allowed. Does it anyway *
Three Spoons founded; starts Warriors
Some workers rearranged to max shield output in Glastonbury.
950: Lighthouse in Stonehenge! Caravan started.
900: Temple in Three Forks>Settlers started.
875: Silk Caravan in Slim Buttes>Settlers started.
Trireme sails from Glastonbury>Settlers started.
Warrior rushed in Three Spoons.
850: Polytheism discovered>researching Philosophy for the freebie.
825: Plan: build a new city on continent to the north, see if we can rush Colossus there and set up a 2-city trade scheme between it and Stonehenge (HG).
Egyptians move their capital to Heliopolis
800: Nice 2(+?) special site located to the north.
Babylonians start Pyramids.
750: Stonehenge builds Gems Caravan>starts Caravan. The site to the north is whale/gems/fish/wheat!!
725: Men-an-Tol builds Silk Caravan>starts Settlers.
Temptation Isle founded>starts Warriors.
700: Vikings are almost done Pyramids. This bodes ill, as the Babylonians will likely switch to Colossus next turn.
675: Pyramids in Trondheim. Chinese switch to Colossus, Babylonians to GL.
650: Settlers in Three Forks>starts Caravan. Settlers in Glastonbury>starts Caravan. Warriors in TemptationIsle>starts Colossus.
625: Philosophy discovered>Wheel>researching Republic (on the road to Democracy and SoL).
STYOM retires to dream of the stars... and hopefully get the High Priestess's underthings out of his mind
We should be able to rush Colossus if necessary next turn. We seem to be stagnating a bit - there's only one other city site on our maps, and not a good one at that
Nonetheless, things look OK - for now. Science crawls along at 10 turns/tech. My successor may wish to use the Settlers soon to come on line to pump up TemptationIsle, or convert one of the build orders to a Trireme and explore a bit more.
