so, an example: img src="flag.png" title="Republic of XYZ"

I'll add a vote to this suggestion. And yes the title tag will work on IE as well.

Cote d'Ivoire? Ireland? Why bother having two flags exactly the same for different countries.
Perhaps we could merge Romania and Chad's flags too.

Just realised why that flag didn't look right, its Ireland's rotated through 180 degrees.
Ignore my first comment, my second one about Chad and Romania is valid though.

Alrighty, since my thread was closed (just when the debate started to really take off, of course), I hereby repeat my request to include the flag of the Iroquois League of Nations.

I noticed that as well, a few days ago. I assume it's temporary, but maybe Markos or Dan knows more?

Ribannah, when did they adopt a flag?
The management have declined to include other nations or countries that no longer exist, like the USSR. I think Mark has mentioned recognition by the UN.
Why should there be a dispensation?

No dispensation is needed, as the Iroquois League still exists.
Recognition has existed at least since 1923 when Cayuga chief Descaheh was the first 'indigenous' representative in Geneva to what was then the League of Nations, and has been re-confirmed by the UN in 1977. Quite a few Iroquois leaders have spoken at the UN over the last decades.
The Iroquois League has the same status at the UN as Palestine. They do not accept this as the final outcome. Together with the Soschone, Hopi and several others who never ceded their independence (most Amerind nations did), the fight for full membership goes on.
The flag depicts the original wampum belt of Hiawatha, which has always symbolized the unity of the Iroquois. It shows the five principal member tribes. From left to right: the Seneca, the keepers of the Western Door; the Cayugas, the "people of the marsh" and "keepers of the Great Pipe"; The Onondaga, who were the "name bearers" who kept the wampum belt that contained the history of the Iroquois; the Oneida, the "stone people" symbolized by the Great Tree; and lastly the Mohawk, the "keepers of the eastern door".
So it was 'adopted' in 1451 (best estimate of when the league was formed). It was in 1977 or maybe a few years before that it started to get multiplied in the shape of a common flag. Today you can find a great many copies of the flag in both Canada and the USA.
The Iroquois also have their own passports, used by ao the National Iroquois lacrosse team that participates in world championships.

The part where I expect an argument to appear for this discriminatory decision.
The second thing I do not understand is why you allow everyone else to ask for new flags without threatening to ban them, but not me.
Why are you so afraid?

Although I guess somewhere I can understand your position (although I still agree with Markos), but if Markos says no (3 times!), Markos says no. I *know* you are intelligent enough to know what that means...
Oh well, now it's too late. Enjoy the Mingapulco sun - I hear it's quite lovely this time of the year

Markos has succeed AH as Uber Troll. He has given the posters a nice feature which they wanted, and are mostly grateful for, and at the same time set many of them at each others throats. This has a degree of sophistication and sublety unmatched by previous trolls. Just like the Golden apple with "for the Fairest" inscribed upon it.
Or,..... the above paragraph could be interpreted to mean that the posters are not fully capable of dealing with a feature that assists nationalistic sentiment, and perhaps it would be better if their unexpectedly dangerous toy be revoked.

about flags:
Bouvet Island, a tiny uninhabited Norwegian possesion in the Antarctic, has its own flag! Of course it's a Norwegian flag, but it's much better than the "Apolyton version" of Norway's flag(which is grey where it should be white).
Bouvet:
Norway: (notice the bad white)

I like the Norway flag better. It isn't as flaming red. I'm not Norwegian so it should matter though.
Anyway, are we ever going to get a Texas flag?

Acoording to the enuciated standard, Texas ceased being elegible for a flag at apolyton 157 years ago when it was annexed to the USA.

Hey, the flags should be identical, but they're not. One of them got bad colouring. Replace the current Norway flag with a copy of the Bouvet flag, and everything's as it should be

Oh yes, that is why only countries have flags at ACS.

The basic criteria for a flag to be included is for Markos to want it in there.
Thats it.
