Regent for me, though winning pretty frequently now. I may give Monarch a try, but the game is a good challenge on this level for me, so why bother with handicaps?

Regent
And don't bother with the manual, it's got more errors then Carter has liver pills.
And BTW, who here hasn't gone on an ego trip and take over the world on Cheiftan?

Emperor mostly, Monarch if I'm testing a theory.

Been playing Regeant, moving over to Monarch now. And yeah when first playing Civ3 after losing horribly on Warlord I went on Chieftain and conquered a buncha Civs on a pangea map, heh.

I flirted with Emperor, but was soundly humbled, so I reverted to Monarch for the past four or five games. I may try again after my current game, which is so easy I'm bored.

I'm able to beat the game on any difficulty, but I enjoy playing Monarch the most. Enough of a challenge, but still relatively fair, without the AI getting outrageous bonuses, simply to make it 'harder'.

Trying out Monarch right now, having some real fun (read "in trouble").
Before that game I played only regent. After I was able to win five games in a row using all random conditions and accepting whatever position I was given, I decided to move up the ladder.
And there's definitely a steep step: 5-6 techs behind, no treasury worth the name, only 20% of my units upgraded to the standard of the day (1000AD) ... Feeling the heat and liking it...

I normally play Monarch. In my lastest game I moved down to Regent for a bit of fun, ie. not having to micro-manage every bit of my empire to squeeze every last drop out of it.
I could never go past Emperor in Civ2 and I think I got my but handed to me when I played Emperor in Civ3. Not good enough I guess. But I prefer fun over a challenge, though both would be best.

I am not sure people who voted deity or emperor are playing with the standard rules or without restarting when their initial position is not good.
I voted regent but with standard rules, large map and with any starting position (even without fresh water some times).

Emperor, no diety games yet (don't know if ever)
my current one is not modded.
I did restart a couple of times, but only to get a difficult start (wanted to do something similar to Aeson), diddn't work out the way i hoped, so I set myself a new challenge.
I did not trade or conquer any techs. I did sell 2 or 3 but only to very weak civs.
Game is virtually won by late middleages

Modded Emporer/Diety. The settings I use make it a little more difficult than standard emporer, and a little less difficult than Diety. In general it's Diety production for the AI, but with Emporer bonusses (like starting units).
I can win diety though, but's no fun at all. It forces me to addopt a playstyle (warmonger + infinite city sleeze) that I don't particulary like.

emperor, even though i hardly ever survive. but i prefer being challenged with and a great AI than winning with a whimpy computer oponent.
hey, in diety, the enemy actually prepares for a war, stacks up 100s of units and attacks at once, destroying your land, taking away your resources, allying against you and finally destroying you. and that is, if you make it past the first few rounds
