I prefer playing with european or ancient Civs, even they are not the best choise. If I had to go for MP or hunting the highscore, I would prefer playing other Civs with good characteristics. All in one Egypt seems to be my favorite Civ - it's "ancient" and ind+rel.!

I must say the Chinese, for three reasons:

1. Militaristic and industrious. Die, neighbors!

2. They tend to start on GREAT LAND. I play huge + continents, 4 billion years, and man, the Chinese often seem to start with some of the best possible land, fertile and productive. Of course, sometimes they start on a piece of tundra or in the middle of a desert, but all Civs do that.

3. The RIDER!!! It comes at the time when I personally am ready to conquer 2-4 Civs (15-30 cities or so), and it's relatively unbeatable as a "knight" unit.

On the other hand, the Aztecs are the only Militaristic, Religious, and de-facto Expanionist Civ, so if you gamble big in the beginning of the game and can deal with no golden age later, they're definitely up there...

The Civilization which SEEMS the best but is always UTTERLY WORTHLESS are, of course, the Babylonians. You'd think Scientific and Religious would breeze an intelligent player to victory... so why are they ALWAYS BEHIND their rivals in terms of science and culture? Arrrgh...

1. Germany- Kick in the pants to research; and late offensive UU plays well into my build-build-build-SWARM warfare tactic. Nothin' says lovin' like Elite Panzers in the oven!

2. China- Ditto, save for the science. Beat the advancements outta your foes in the Middle Ages.

3. Rome- See above; except you do it in the Ancient Age.

I guess it all comes down to when I feel like fighting- early, late or in the middle of the game.

My first ever win was with the Indians, but my favorite civ has to be the Aztecs. It's to easy to run an early slaughterhouse with those Jags.

My favorite PTW civ is the Ottomans. My Sipahis will crush all of you.

Babylon is easiest for me to play.

So far it is the only civ I can win with on Monarch (small map), thanks to those Babylonian Bowmen. I love that religious trait, scientific is good but I would gladly trade that for industrious. That would make it Egypt but if I played Egypt I would miss out on the Bowmen so that rules out Egypt. I am in the middle of a monarch game in which I switched Babylons' scientific trait for industrious and it is going unexpectedly well.

All that said England is my favourite (Anglo-centric bias ) but it is probably the weakest civ in the game. I always play England at Warlord and sometimes at Regent.

Man, but on a HUGE world with all the others Civs, despite their highly desirable traits and good ancient UU, the Babs always seem to go the way of the... well... Babylonians... i.e., EXTINCTION at the hands of a larger, more agressive empire!

Or maybe I just play the game wrong...

Try playing on a map without a single trace of iron and see how cool is the Samurai

Any civ that has commercial, industrious or religious as their two traits. France gets the vote due to the best special unit of those shortlisted.

Man, I gotta say, it better be industrious, or else...

Those Ottomans are hard to beat! The Chinese, too.

I'm playing a game as the Egyptians right now, and the only ones who are giving me a real run for the money are two other industrious civs: The French and Carthaginians.

What's with the Greeks, though? Why do they always get to be so powerful, yet they always seem to difficult to play as? Maybe I just don't "get it" yet...

I dunno, I like china alot, the GA is perfect for all those middle age wonders, the knight rules on the offensive, and musketmen are a ways off. Industrial means for better infastructure, as well as being able to utilize your new land, making for more wars.

I may try egpt, I originally thought religious was pretty crappy, however, by all the comments on it I think I will try it. Theoretically, cheaper temples(big bonus?) and one turn anarchy(out of 4 or 5?) didn't sound that great.

Gotta agree with you on China... perfect GA timing.

As for religious, though, don't knock it... at later points in the game, those 4-5 turns of anarchy can really mess you up, especially during wartime, and if you're anything like me, you're likely to be a huge democracy constantly at war...

Also, it's great to sacrifice your people to build temples cheaply in the game early on. It really gives you an edge. If the Egyptians didn't have such a lame UU, I'd be tempted to pick them as my favorite Civ.

Still, I'm with China. I use those riders in at least 2 major wars, and then one crossover war where I use them alongside cavalry, generally.

Egypt actually has the best UU in the game, athough to use it properly, you must NOT build the Pryamids or come into possesion of both an Industrial & Religious wonder too early.

Usually when discover a tech that contians a unit that the units you have can upgrade to, you can no longer build the obsolete unit. This is not the case for the UUs prior to having the GA.

As Egypt, you can keep building WCs after Chivary, and upgrade them to Knights as long as you haven't had your GA yet.

In fact, you can even keep building WCs after Military Tradition and upgrade them all the way to Calvary if you haven't had your GA yet.

You will need to manually change the unit selection every time you discover a tech though.

Since money is easier to come by than shields, this is a major money saver. Even better if you build or capture Leos.

Hmmm, I have heard you mention this before, or someone else perhaps.

I will have to give it a shot sometime, but I always use UUs for conquest, except for ancient ones such as Bowmen and War Chariots. I'm unsure whether to do the same with Legionaries - refrain from using them that is.

So, when you play as Egypt, you conquer only with swordsmen/medival infantry until Military Tradition?

No way, panag! Expanionist is not a garunteed positive, and the F-15 is too late in the game to make a big difference.

Excuse me, I don't want to start a "flame" here, but I consider your message very rude, Panag. You imply that I am not a "good" player, and I certainly am not as advanced a player as many here on Apolyton. But in my defense, I must say this:

In addition to their UUs, the Chinese and Ottomans have excellent traits. Even without their UUs, they are in the top escelon of civs. I think even "good" players would agree with that.
