There may be an obvious way to do this, but i sure haven't found it. How many turns are there in a game? (If it depends on difficulty do whatever)

As many as it takes you to play .

From 4000 BC, each turn counts as 20 years. From some other year, it counts as 10, then 5, finally 1. I'm sure someone knows when those borders are.

It's 50 years when in the Ancient Era.

use gramphos' multitool, edit a savegame and check the years... i can't do it, since MT doesn't work with v1.29f yet.

afaik, the total sum of moves is somewhere around 500.

CTP2 told you the turn count every time you looked at one of the power graphs. Is knowing the turn count important to having fun? No but it is attention to details like that which seporate the excellent game from the average game.

Since that's 7 increments, and there's only 4 eras, how is it decided when it moves on to the next increment?

era comes by tech, the turn-lengths are hardcoded.

if you place 16 civs on a standard map at diety level, modern era is reached around 1 AD !! but turn lengths are something like 10 years / turn.

damnit, i just can't find the chart ;(

540 turns total. Read it here quite some time ago. OTOH, I have an actual chart of the turns which I downloaded, and it shows
560 turns, so perhaps the 540 was either wrong or my memory circuits shorted.

Here is the year list I based my 560 count on. It was produced to assist in keeping track of when trade (and other) agreements were made.

Filename is Treaty Years.doc; a 1-page MS Word document (don't forget to change the filename as you download it -- perhaps sometime the forum will stop messing with the filename).

Attachment Deleted (see corrected version below).

It is 540.

For an Excel conversion from date to turn number: (has to be a valid Civ3 date, in column D in this case)

=IF($D:$D > 1950,$D:$D - 1950 + 440, IF($D:$D > 1750, (($D:$D - 1750) / 2) + 340, IF($D:$D > 1250, (($D:$D - 1250) / 5) + 240, IF($D:$D > 250, (($D:$D - 250) / 10) + 140, IF($D:$D > -750, (($D:$D +750) / 20) + 90, IF($D:$D > -1750, (($D:$D + 1750) / 25) + 50, IF($D:$D > -2750, (($D:$D + 2750) / 40) + 50, ($D:$D + 4000) / 50)))))))

Not very pretty, but it works.

A table:

4000BC 1 turn, N/A years from previous turn
3950BC - 2750BC 25 turns, 50 years from previous turn
2710BC - 1750BC 25 turns, 40 years from previous turn
1725BC - 750BC 40 turns, 25 years from previous turn
730BC - 250AD 50 turns, 20 years from previous turn
260AD - 1250AD 100 turns, 10 years from previous turn
1255AD - 1750AD 100 turns, 5 years from previous turn
1752AD - 1950AD 100 turns, 2 years from previous turn
1951AD - 2050AD 100* turns, 1 year from previous turn

*2050AD is not a full turn, only a few automated events happen.

Thank you, Aeson.

The file I had posted has TWO duplicate columns in it. I thought I had deleted the one I had found earlier, but I hadn't (sorry). With Aeson's response I looked over it again and found the other duped column.

I post the corrected version for anyone who might be interested.
