Avatar Description / Explanation Field
Avatar Description / Explanation Field
When I see somebody's flag and think "what is that?" I just have to hold the cursor over it to see the name of the country.
Why not have the same thing with custom avatars? Each profile could include an editable field of up to 25 chars to provide a description.

Considering all the crap some people put in their signatures and location fields... I have no interest in giving them another place to put more crap

C'mon Ming, it might divert us from putting so much crap in the threads for a moment.

I have to go with Ming on this, but for different reasons. I don't want anything else slowing down this forum.

That's a good idea, actually.
Alternate idea: display your exact postcount when you hover the mouse over the avatar.

Ah, this wouldn't be hard to implement at all. For postcount, you'd just have to change the postbit_avatar template to:
PHP Code:
|
<img src="$avatarurl" border="0" alt="Postcount: $post[posts]">
|
For avatar description, you'd just have to add another user profile field and change the code to:
PHP Code:
|
<img src="$avatarurl" border="0" alt="$post[fieldx]">
|
where the x is the number of the field. Quite simple, really.

I'd rather have my avatar trigger an annoying piece of MIDI music when somebody clicks on it. Any piece of Christian rock would do nicely, or else one of the more questionable Moody Blues songs.

I think we should have it, just so Ron Jeremy can mess with the minds of whoever hovers the cursor over his avatar.

I support that original suggestion. Descriptions for custom avatars wouldn't be bad at all. More advertising space available to sell to my sponsors.
aaglo, are you trying to be somekind of anti-spam watchdog?

*laughing like Homer Simpson*
BTW, I feel now more supportive than before for those descriptions after recently starting to use my new custom avatar. It really needs it.

Just don't put it into the Light stylesheet.
I think it is a great idea!

Actually, doing it the way I proposed would let anyone put whatever they want there, regardless of whether or not their avatar is custom.

PHP Code:

<img*src="$avatarurl"*border="0"*alt="Postcount:**$post[posts]">

You mean
PHP Code:
|
<img*src="$avatarurl"*border="0"*title="Postcount:**$post[posts]">
|
The W3C standard specifies title as the tooltip text. I don't know if it works in IE, but alt doesn't work in Opera and that's all that matters.

Ah... I haven't seen title used before, just alt. The default template in vbulletin looks like this:
PHP Code:
|
<img src="$avatarurl" border="0" alt="">
|
Or at least in the version that my website runs.

I was suggesting it to limit to 25 chars and only be for custom so that the loading would not be much slower. What's the point in knowing what the non-custom avatars are?
I figure that an average of perhaps 10-15 extra chars per post would have a trivial load time compared to the avatars themselves.
