Question Reguarding Colonies
I've never seen this before, so I was wondering what would happen. Maybe some of you have seen it.
Say you're lagging behind in the tech race, and the other civs get refining before you (they can see oil, you cant).
in my game, i modded it so you cant settle deserts and tundras, so the AI actually uses colonies quite a bit.
what would happen if you couldnt see oil, but the AI built a colony? what if you tried to move onto the square (assuming it was undefended), what if you were at war, and you kill the unit there?
would you even know a colony was there?

I think I get what your saying...
You're probably right, you wouldn't know. It'd be a bug in the game if you did, you could then use that information to aquire that square before you have the right tech.
BTW Lagging behind in the tech race is also hard to imagine

I'm not sure I understand why you wouldn't see an AI colony. I can understand not seeing the resource if you don't have the appropriate tech.
If you capture an undefended AI colony it is destroyed. You can't capture colonies. If it is defended the defenders must all be eliminated first.

UberKruX, good idea! You should still be able to see the colony, just not what is under it. Mashing an AI colony is an act of war, should you need to know.

if you saw an AI colony in the middle of a desert with nothing under it, you'd assume it was oil wouldnt you? and if you couldnt see the oil, what exactly would you see? would you see a colony with no resource? would you even SEE the colony?

Doh!!!!!!!!!!! I get it now. Amazing how clear things are after a cup of coffee
I do see your point now. Hmmm.....AFAIK colonies don't project any borders. If you indeed can't see his colony then when you unknowingly move into that tile his colony is destroyed. But you would never know it. But wouldn't there be a road leading up to that tile? Next time I start a new game I'll see if I can see AI roads leading to "nowhere". Your theory might just be true. In that case this could be considered a bug.

Cntrl-Shift-M to see resources on map. It helps to place mouse pointer over tile you want to investigate and to pick some known landmark. It is amazing how much goes away when units/roads/cities disappear.

Surely you'd *have* to see the colony. I mean, even if you had no clue what that black goop was that was being pumped out of the ground, you'd seem 'em pumping it up.
What if you were moving over the spot where the colony was? I'd think you'd have to bump into it, wouldn't you? I suppose if it were garrisioned and you killed the garrison, you'd disperse the colony underneath it. If the resources were hidden, I guess the colony could be as well (in game terms). If so, you wouldn't even know you'd destroyed it.
Creepy existentialism! If an iron mine is built in the hills, but I can't see it, does it really exist? Who knew the game was so complex?

No, it's just the hot key combination for a feature that is present in the preferences menu. It allows you to see the map without any overlays (units, cities, roads, colonies, etc.).

Sorry
You should be able to see the colony even if you don't know what it is for. Does that answer the question?
