884 plastic pieces! Oh my goodness! There's at least plenty of pieces to loose then.
But it sounds interesting that they have already decided to make an expansion pack; or at least most likely. Is this going to be a new killer like Pokemon? So should we start to compare Sid to Picachu?
As far as I quickly took a preview (will print it and read later on after Band of Brothers), it looks promising. Perhaps I'll have a go for this.
Anyway, Snapcase; thanks for posting!

Thank you Snapcase.
They put in a wrong link to this file. It takes you to a Civ 2 link. I had to do a search to find it.

Now, my understanding was Civilization was based on a board game anyway, released by Avalon-Hill. Hence their own release of Advanced Civilization and the Call To Power's modified trade rules that were closer to the original game.
SO, we now have a board game based off the computer game based off the board game? Which came first, the chicken of the egg.

If my PC can't handle Civ3, how long must it take to get through a turn in a decent boardgame version of it?
Would like to hear that this game is great, but I'm not holding my breath.

Actually, your slow computer is saving you from the expense and boredom that is Civ 3.

yes the old civilization board game is quite different from the computer series, it all takes place during the ancient era, no techs, very few units, and very different gameplay (which takes more than a few re-reads of the manual IIRC)

Hmm according to my experience conversion of pc-games are very bad and most of them flopped but this sounds quite good although it might take a long time moving all these units around but boardgames have the nostalgic bonus you know: back in these good old days when computer where seldom and the whole world played risk or diplomacy the boardgames. Well I like playing it with my friends on Saturday afternoon continuing the whole night

There were techs (cards) that you could buy, but units were broken down into only two rough types, armies and fleets. It wasn't all that bad of a game, and not nearly as complex as many. Still it was complex enough to be above the "Beer and Pretzel" category.

It is very interesting that this board game is out. My daughter saw it for sale in Hamleys of London (big toy shop). It was too heavy to carry home on the train. I have contacted the toy shop to see if they will sell it to me via the post but don't know of anyone else in England that is selling it. To buy it from the US would cost far too much in postage and import duty I suspect. Is it the sort of game that you buy in shops that sell Dungeons and Dragons games and figurines? Has anyone got it yet to know whether it is worth buying?
Thanks,
Jan

60 bucks too... :eek!: Not exactly chutes and ladders, is it? I've heard some early reports that the games take a VERY long time, much longer than six to eight hours.
Strange, but I saw another game in a DandD shop called Civilization that looked to be from europe.

Well some friends and I have been playing it with slightly changed rules to reduce some of the random effects at the start of the game that can be game-breakers. We finally made it to the modern era (after a few games of early endings), and we found our game is missing the SETI project wonder. Can anyone out there tell me what it does?

Yea, I'm talking about the old Avalon Hill game called Civilization. It came out long before Sid made Civ 1 for the PC. It's not a bad game btw. IIRC they put out an advanced version of it later, but I never played that one. The game mentioned in the first post of this thread is also called Civilization, but it is a spin-off of the computer game we all know and love.

I am expecting that the game will take a long time to play especially at first as I get familiar with the rules etc. I thought that I might start the game and come back to it at intervals as I can't see being able to devote eight hours to it at one go; hubby may begin to feel neglected! Hopefully I have a table big enough to put the board on + all the bits and pieces. I don't think that I can spend eight hours at a time crawling around on the floor!
Did anyone get a signed copy? Now that would be something!

The manual has little blurbs at the top of the pages, and one of these states they have an expansion pack in the works - no idea what it would include though.

Thanks HolyWarrior! Interesting about SETI - it is mentioned as a Wonder you get with Computers (IIRC) -I can check when I get back on the 5th. It would make the tech too expensive if it didn't have something like a Wonder accompanying it, so perhaps they removed it and like idiots didn't adjust the tech card before release.
