Absolutely astounding! Or as one of the posters said over there Mein Gott!
This win ranks up there with Aesons Deity win on that very bad starting location.
One thing I noticed in the German players game setup was that he used archipelago. I think this helps a lot with avoiding ugly wars with others, esp. if you are the only one on your little island. If I understand correctly, it appears that that player was able to weave an alliance that had Germany and I think Greece at war with Iroquois and his allies. Now I've heard over and over again the importance of good diplo but this player takes the cake. He had most of the other civs on gracious or polite terms with him. Truely astounding!

I don;t really read German, but some things need no translation:
Wie hast Du das GA getiggert?
Also, they seemingly know us, as Hadrian put a link back to the Virtue of Being Industrious!

That's only because half of them play the English version. In German, GA would be GZ, "Goldenes Zeitalter". And "getriggert" is a germanized "triggered", a loan from the English civilopedia, I guess. Also, I see them often post "AI", even though it's "KI" in German, "Künstliche Intelligenz".

You're not Hadrian, by any chance?

No. I am registered with the same handle like here, but I have only 4 or 5 posts there, mostly rants about Infogrames (because they don't translate 1.29f into German).

A thought occured to me while thinking about playing absolute pacifist. In order to maintain Gracious relationships with most of the civs your civ must be able to generate a lot of wealth. Carefull trading, improvements both tile and city, and accurate pop placing on tiles are all a must. The question is how do you keep up with the tech race? Money alone isn't enough as tech prices increase dramatically as you advance up the tree.
Then I thought about how he played his game. An archipelago map is really hard I think to make money because more often than not you are stuck on a relatively small island. The more I think about this challenge the more I realize how difficult it must have been for that player to win.

Hi!
I'm the guy who posted the description of an absolute pacifist game on the german site.
I'm pleased to see that the idea caught on!
I guess some of you already tried it yourself, but for those who didn't i wanted to say: try it! it's hilarious! I think i never had such a funny and exciting game of Civ3 before.
2 remarks:
- the setting for babarians was sedentary, i thought i would need some goody huts (which turned out to be true )
- when you don't build any military it's quite easy to make money, because there's plenty of time where you can't build anything but wealth
If you're interested i could try to translate the description.

Absolutely! Google's translation was nearly indecipherable and it's been years since I tried to understand Deutsch (although I didn't have much difficulty communicating when I was actually over there).

Pacifist game on Emperor
Sorry to bump an old thread, but the topic fits here...
I just finished an Emperor diff game as an ultra-pacifist (no military units at all). I was curious how this might work with the changes in the PtW AI. I went with a (cough) natural choice for this, the Mongols.
We started on an icy rock surrounded by a lot of jungle. (And no, I didn't end up alone on the island)
Archipelago, Raging Barbarians (ouch)
Foes: Germany, Russia, Iroquois, Vikings, England, France, Korea
It's written up in story form (in English :P ), and I won't mention the ending here, but I will say it was quite a fun game.
