I would normally say Literature so we can get the Great Library, but building military, settlers, and other improvements are much more important for the moment. Also, we don't have any cities with a decent production.
Although Republic is overall better than Monarchy, we'll need the police happiness since we only have one luxury.
Right now, expansion is our primary objective and we need to reduce corruption as much as possible. So I say that we go with a new government: Monarchy.

I must admit that I never considered the part about Republic not allowing any military police... but still, I guess we can make up for it by alloting more money for entertainment, and besides we'll have wines if the French campaign is successful. Still, at the moment we'll be better off with monarchy...
IMHO Monarchy should be our choice of government, but once we secure more luxuries and maybe have a cathedral/colosseum or two we should switch to republic.

Well it looks like we can soon get currency and construction, so I think it is time to decide what gov we want. Though lets face it we will buy it from somebody.
Also question(since i am to lazy to figure it out myself) did our putting research into techs make currency less( we can get it for 279 and const for 372), or is currency just naturally less. This is an important question since the answer will determine if it is worth in to research techs or not.

Currency is naturally more worth : before the AI had it, we couldn't get it in less than 40 turns, even at 100% science. However, at 100% science we could have got constrution in 30 turns or so.

Unfortunantly panag, we've looked into this and it seems highly unlikely (next to impossible) we'd be the first to build the great library. Our best hope is it will be built in Paris.

Correction: Our self-delusional hope is that it will be built in Paris.

Well it is our last best hope. Doesn't mean it will happen.

Republic vs. Monarchy
I agree with Shiber's first point. Republic's extra trade makes it worth our while even if we are unable to use police. I can't be sure, but I believe that the increase in trade, if it were all allocated to Entertainment, would more than make up for the loss of martial law. There should be some left over for science, and with that on top of losing the Despotism penalty we'll reach Literacy, and later Feudalism, Monotheism, Chivalry, Engineering, Invention, Gunpowder (or whatever tech train we choose) a lot quicker than otherwise.
It will take a while, but if Republic means that we get the strong weapons of the Medieval era a lot quicker (and an approximate 3:2 ratio is what I've experienced in my games), then it could very well be superior to Monarchy, from a strategic point of view. As Shiber said, we can always switch to Monarchy if necessary, or, if we haven't acquired that yet, even back to Despotism.
In a way, Republic is perfect for the jungle -- it doesn't matter whether a square was already producing trade or not; you get the extra gold all the same.
Just my two cents.

Really? I thought the tile had to produce commerce. Only one, but I thought it did.

I may be thinking of SMAC, where Free Market doesn't need you to produce commerce.
When I get back home I'll check.

hi ,
look at it again , ........
some people took the game on the side and did build it , they played ahead just for that , there outcome , we can win under 1.21f with a mere 55% , ........
so reason enough to look at it again , and the shields we collect can be used for something else if they have it first , ....
have a nice day

Right now we are preparing for war so we can't divert enough shields to make that effort.

I was wrong again
Yep, looks like I confused that with SMAC. Republic does need an arrow already there to give bonus trade.
That makes it seem a bit less appetizing.

Wait, panag. You're telling us the result of someone playing ahead? That is grounds for some serious trouble.

hi ,
nope , not playing ahead , "strategic planning" , testing , seeing if this or that theory is working , loads of people do it , ....!
and this should be done by more people to , it can only be more intresting , ...
not 40 turns ahead or so , just take the turn we are in now , see what happens if you break this or that , in that turn , then go back with autosave , play that turn with breaking something else , learning the species that invade our breathing space , ....
have a nice day
