Leader.INI file?
whenever i attack with a elite unit and the game seems ready to give me a leader i get an error saying...
cannot find file
Art\units\leader\leader.INI
then it shuts civ down. when i go look in my units folder i have 4 leader folders... Leader ancient, leader industrial, leader middle ages and leader modern. why is it looking for just a Leader folder and not the individual era folders?
is there anyway i can fix this? im running the game without a cd as mine was stolen.. am i screwed? why is the game doing this? help.
please and thanks.

Re: Leader.INI file?
Just a very vague idea here... what is the name of the directory you have your Civ3 installed in? The game is sometimes unable to load/save files from/to directories that have a period in their full pathname (so if you had named the basic directory, say "Civ3 1.29f", you might be in troubles). It is probably not it, but... well, it is all I can think of.
The subdirectory names you mention are just fine, they are the same in my installation (playing without the CD, too... mine was not stolen and rests happily in the tin box, I am just too damn lazy to insert it every time...).

does it matter what format the INI file is in? when i look at the properties it has it as a notebook file.. this is correct? what bothers me is that it used to work and leaders used to work but now it doesnt. im confuzzled.

The file extension should be *.ini, not *.txt

Look at the ini files for any other unit and confirm that it is an ini file in the properties. If so then maybe its just the Leader ini's that have been changed. Try renaming the leader.txt (notebook) to leader.ini .

hmmm, it IS an ini file and there is no period in the file name... though the game seems to think there is i tried to get the error again and it said
Error Reading File
.art\units\leader\leader.ini
but there is no period at the start of that in my folder.. ummm, any suggestions?
would i be just better off borrowing the cd from someone and reloading it all?
i guess i could play the game without leaders.. but that kinda makes things a bit tougher cuz i play on diety ( the only way )
and when i look at the properties of the ini file it has it listed as a configuration settings file.. but they are all like that. and they all say they are opened with notepad. when i change the type of file it is, it then tells me its a ini file.. but.. is this right?
suggestions? comments? answers? recipies?
thanks

It doesn't matter that it says opens with Notepad. That's only for your convenience when YOU want to open the file under Windows. The game just checks the correct filename (and content).
I also have just the four era-dependent leader.ini files, no generic one. Maybe that was from an earlier game version and something went wrong when you installed a patch?

I'm afraid you need to install the game from scratch (and then re-install the latest patch).

I may be mis-remembering but I thought that the ini files showed that extension prior to 1.29. Now you have to go to properties to see that. My windows doesnt see them as notebook files it recognizes them as configuration files (of course when you click on them they open as wordpad files).

nope, i havent renamed any of the eras.
wtf?
this is exactly what it says
Load Error
Error Reading File
".\Art\Units\Leader\Leader.INI"
should that period be at the front of that? its not in the file name.

The dot just means that it's looking in the current working directory which is the directory where the Civ3.exe is.
I tried to find that file and it doesn't exist, like you said. I too only have the 4 leader directories with their own, specific "Leader xxx Times.ini" files.
However, I had a leader with the 1.29 patch and had no problems so far.

I'm not sure why you would be having this problem based on the information so far, but you should be able to fix it by copying Leader Modern Times (or any of the leader folders) to a folder called Leader and renaming the new Leader Modern Times.ini within this folder to Leader.ini.

Nope, it is enough to create a fake "no-era" Leader.INI file. Remember - Mike told you to create a renamed COPY of one of the era specific folders/INI files. I believe it is important that you leave the current Leader folders and INI files as they are (you might be having troubles missing the original files otherwise).
