Which countries do you play?
In an effort to revive the EU forum I've decided to post a few new threads and hopefully we can spark a few new discusions. So tell me everyone which countries do you like to play?
Personally, I find myself switching between Sweden, England, and France. I like Sweden & England because they have great defensive positions while still maintaining reasonable good prospects for expansion. France on the other hand becomes the dominant contential power once you complete it's unification.

I never get stuck with just a few countries. There are a few I've played more than once though - like Denmark, Brandenburg and the Ottomans

I have only played Denmark and Byzantium until now. I think it must be boring to play a large country. The best part of the game is in IMHO the beginning when you aren't yet omnipotent. With one of the majors you are most of the time relatively omnipotent at the start.

Yet I played twice as Poland and once as Turkey. Am going to play Byzantium if I find a nice game. Oh, I started one game as Trebizond but after capturing Sivas it became quite boring as I got so little money so I resigned of it.

I think I am going to play Byzantium in my next game. Has anyone tried the Byzantium EEP at www.europa-universalis.com? I've been told the scripting makes playing Bysantium more fun and more historics, as well as, adding in a few "what if" senerios that make things interesting.

I did play the EEP and I would really recommend it. I think it'll become quite boring without any events anyway. And unbalancing because Byzantium doesn't get a CoT in Thrace in the standard version.

Byzantium and Ottoman Empire are my favorites, because they have several cultures, lots of core territory, and it's easy to expand in every direction.
Brandenburg and Venice are always fun. And Flanders is good too
The other european major powers are also always fun but much easier ofcourse. ( except for some nasty Russian events )

I prefer Sweden (my native country), Portugal (can concentrate on exploring and colonizing), Russia (massive expansion true war and colonization, mostly as Muscowy) or Austria(trynig for a purely diplomatic game).

Being new to this I have only played as France, Prefferring to play in the Grand campaign scenario. I thought that you could only play as the, what 7 nations whose coat-of-arms are depicted on the screen. Yet you have played as Denmark and Flanders, nations I thought you could not even pick. I know this is off-topic, but if somebody could tell me how to choose the other nations, it would be much appreciated.

You need to rightclick on the shield and then you can select almost every country that exists at the start of the scenario. (Note that a few countries (like Manchu IIRC) can't be selected eventough they exist in the scenario. You need to manually add that country's tag to the scenario file.)
To play with non-existing countries like Flanders, Sicilia etc. you should start a new game and select the country that owns them.
So if you want to play with Flanders you start playing with Burgundy, release Flanders as a vassal, save, select the savegame (from the main menu), rightclick Burgundy's shield and choose Flanders and load the game.

Russia, Brandenburg, and France. France might be hard if you do not chose a historical path in the Wars of Religion, and get dowed by England and Spain during the first few years after the event. I just lost that game as France, the only game I lost as a major power. I had to give 5 provinces to England, and give 3 to Spain and become their vassal.

I was reading the linked thread and I must admite that was truly masterful play.

I think Brandenburg is a favourite to many players here.
Well, so I had to try it out myself... Yeah, challenging and fun!
But what the F***, I get no leaders!
Except for that, Portugal was fun... Colonization II.
(the sequel that never came)
And Norway... A helluva challenge, trying to dominate the scandinavian peninsula and to subdue the Danish. (strong at sea)

Sweden, France, Ottomans, Venice, England and Spain. I just don't know why I haven't played minors yet.

So out of all the countries everyone has played which the hardest one which you still did well in? I played Gelre the other day and was able to unite the Dutch proviences and build a colonial empire long before the Netherlands was united in real life. I also played Ethiopia the other day and did well enough to annex nubia and take over most of the nearby coastal proviences dispite the fact that the arabs tried to invade me a dozen times or so.
Those are modest victories but I'm not up to the world conquest senerios yet.
