How do bombers function in stacked combat with enemy land units? I guess what I mean is say your city has 4 machinegunners 2 fighters and 1 bomber. The enemy is invading with 3 machinegunners, 1 tank, 3 fighters. How does the bomber fair on the offense and defense phases of the stacked combat?

I believe air units cannot be stacked with ground units. Honestly though 90% of the games I play in have a winner long before air planes are invented.

No, they can actually. I've done it on the rare occasion. I couldn't begin to tell you what a good ground unit/air unit combination is, however. Like you, the game is more or less won before I can get a good air force in action.

yo ....finally.... >(
the bomber and fighters occupy the third line... so if there are frontline and range or just frontline... bombers and fighters will act as ranged...
if they're all alone then the bombers are ranged and fighters are like the attacker on the ground
at least that should be right

Alright, I will break down and tell you all a multiplayer secret. Have you ever been bothered by an enemy slaver? Would you like to know a sure fire way to locate those annoying little invisible pests?
All you have to do is right click on the squares near where you think the slaver is located. If the the terrian info box comes up then there is no slaver located in that tile; if you right click and the terrain description box doesn't come up then you know a hidden enemy unit is located there.

Same thing with selecting a unit and point on an enemy city, when the pointer changes to two crossed swords there's at least one unit in there, if it stays a circle the city is empty and you can walk right in. Doesn't always but mostly work, when a city is in the shade, but never fails when you're right there. A bug, IMO.

Hey, that was a classic form of navigation in lousy weather! Pilots called it "the iron compass." Unfortunate if the rail line goes into a tunnel...
I can see your frustration. This forum isn't much of a "strategy & tactics" forum compared to (say) the 'Poly Civ2 or Civ3 forums. I appreciate your attempt, as I too would like to hear more of the Wisdom of the Masters, at least the single-player masters who don't have anything to lose by revealing their favorite tactics. I suppose the MP Masters are perfectly willing to share their tactics...on the Field of Honor.

I agree, it is frustrating to see that there is not much discussion here. The Civ3 forum is bustling with activity. The CtP series are great games and deserve to be talked about more.
Ok enough of that. Here is some simple advice based on my limited experience with CtP2. In the beginning expand to the max amount of cities allowed under the early government. Set PW to about 10 and let your cities grow a bit. Overwork your people to the just before the point of mass revolts. Build up your army and hurt the AI any way you can. When a city reaches pop value of 7 or 8 see if you can assign anyone to scientist. You will need the proper advance that will allow you to do this of course. Mantain constant diplo relations with as many civs as possible and trade trade trade.
Maybe this is not as deep as others can contribute but I hope this helps out beginners.

I would appreciate you still updating the first post, but I think it would be more helpful (and easier for you) if you linked to the posts in question rather than copied them out. A sort of contents page, rather than summary. It would certainly help when people came back to check up on something they read.

Use url tags (hit the "http://" button on the reply screen to see what they look like, for example:
This is a link to your last post
Or, to be quicker, just put the URL in directly, and it will be automatically put in tags. Like this:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...52#post1215552
You can obtain the postid of a post by hovering over the 'edit' or 'reply with quote' buttons. If you can't remember it then copy the shortcut (in the right-click menu in IE).

How can you tell which units are attack/flanker/ranged/defensive , before you build them?
I don't see anything on it in the manual.

You can tell if it's ranged by whether it has a ranged attack strength - the one labelled by an arrow hitting a target, IIRC; an atacker if it has a good attack strength (the sword?) and a defender if it has a large defense strength (the shield). I'm not sure about flanking, but generally flankers are fast units...

Personnally I consider it a bug. One thing is for sure though and that is it works everytime and no one could tell if someone is using it or not.

Another little MP exploit is to disband a city (which you think you are going to lose) while the combat screen is still up. If you disband a city during combat then strange things can happen, however, often the city will be destroyed and so will the entire stack of enemy units located with in the city.
It's a dirty trick but one everyone should be aware of.

Just bump it up to the top of the thread list HuangShang, every few days or so. People will add things from time to time. It's a good thread!
Had those unit things mostly sorted out JB, cheers. Just wasn't sure about the flankers mostly. Might have a good look in the Great Library.
By the way people, what does IIRC stand for?
