...does anybody know if it is possible to change the text color of the pop-up boxes?
Very easy; just edit the palette. Which ones to edit is all explained in my sleague design tip on palettes. Only the UNITS.GIF palette is important, the other palettes don't matter. (Allard, 17 May, 2002)

Text in the top border of all pop-up boxes is actually the UNITS.GIF's palette 16, with a shadow of palette 0. Some text (like "viewing pieces" on the right) is made of palette number 31 with a shadow -again- of number 0 Most other text is palette 6 with a shadow of palette number 23.

Whether or not changing palette colors is simple enough is your call. Not having a editor/knowledge to edit the palette, I'd find it hard. Seems likely to me that you may end up needing to change pixels in the unit images to compensate for altered text colors.
Hope this doesn't rehash stuff you already know.
