You discovered my one weakness, Kass. Now I'm being afro'd to death.

Regarding the statues, display them the way the artists originally intended. Anything else is disrespecting their hard work, and the human body in general.

There's an error in the title. According to the link, in the pic the statue is being undressed after the lunat - err, Christians had dressed it.

"In a store, when you have pornography on a shelf, a decent store owner would cover it up," Barb said. "Here, we actually set it in place and ask people to stare at it."

"One day, appropriately enough, Poseidon was dressed in a toga." This was almost acceptable.

Silly religious people.
I think that porn and art have some fundamental differences.

Then get out the paint. Most of those clasical Greek statues were painted. Maybe not the bronze ones but in general they were painted.

Thats a crummy copy anway. The original looks much better.

From the site

http://www.culture.gr/2/21/214/21405m/e21405m4.html

Quote:
The Poseidon of Artemision. The statue represents Poseidon brandishing the trident with his raised right hand. It is an original work of a great sculptor, possibly of Kalamis. It was raised from the sea, off the cape Artemision, in north Euboea. Dated to ca. 460 B.C. Inv. no. 15161.
Its lucky its not in worse shape. At one point in the 1900's ancient statuary was worth more in pieces than whole to the often poor finders. Thus Venus De Milo has no arms. The finder supposedly broke them off intentionally.

Freaks. This is really Taliban mentality. Sad to see that things like this don't only happen in the Simpsons.

I heard somewhere that all greek statues has small willies because the artists didn't want to embarass any of their co-citizens who were not so well hung.

Most statues have been vandalised in that area anyway, so it's hard to say.

The small willied ones stole the willies from the statue to try and glue it on their own willies

How do the group explain why they thought it should be dressed?

Quote from the article:

Children ask questions, and it's awkward for parents to explain.
It's the parents who are faulted. not the children.

The people in the picture are taking the clothes off, BTW.

Also, there is debate as to whether the statue is of Poseidon (hurling a trident) or Zeus (hurling a thunderbolt).

Oh dear lord...

Quote:
A Christian home-schooling group attending a conference at the Sacramento Convention Center supplied a complete set of clothes required to keep a naked Poseidon statue from offending their children.
Now what child is offended by seeing people nude? The kids love that stuff!

Quote:
And when parents attending the Advanced Training Institute International home-schooling training conference this week, along with hundreds of their children, saw the statue, they decided to find Poseidon a wardrobe.
Translation: Invading Nazi overloards, along with hundreds of their brainwashed zombies, saw the statue and decided to f**k with it.

Quote:
"In a store, when you have pornography on a shelf, a decent store owner would cover it up," Barb said. "Here, we actually set it in place and ask people to stare at it."
Hmm, maybe they should add on to the statue so it has Poseidon getting it on with Jenna Jameson. Now THAT would be pornography.

Quote:
"A lot of the parents would object to the display of public nudity," Voeller said. "We didn't deface the statue and we got permission to cover it for the conference."
Did they also get the city to paint over anything painted red because it symbolised the blood of Jesus shed on the cross?

Quote:
"That statue is for the whole city, not for them," Ford said. "You don't go to a city and decide to change the city's artwork because you think it is not appropriate."
You tell 'em, you defender of truth and justice you.

Quote:
"It's only for a few days," said Pellascio, from Forest Ranch, a Butte County community near Chico. "It always bothered my four older girls to see artwork like that. Children ask questions, and it's awkward for parents to explain. So I think it is appropriate to cover it up at a family event."
Forest Ranch?... sounds familier, ah yes ... it's right near Ingnorant Fundamentalist Ville. Oh, and want to know why it bothers his four older girls? Because they're hoping their boyfriends don't have weiners that small.
And heaven forbid children should make their parents feel *awkward* by asking them about sex!

Quote:
Thomas said the statue was never meant to be offensive, noting that it is not unusual to find statues without clothes throughout the world. If the convention bureau allowed the group to temporarily cover Poseidon, then that is also appropriate, he said.
Only in America, folks...

They were purposefully made smaller because if they were made porportional to the statue they overwhelmed the viewer. Thus statue genitalia is scaled down to a more "human" size.

They do have a legitimate point about statues being clothes, however. The original statue was both painted and clothed during the period of the ancient Greeks. Literal idol worship, this pratice was originally banned by the Christians. Isn't that ironic.

They were chopped off my the early Christians (yes Greeks themselves) since they found them both offensive due to the new religion as well as the whole statues paganistic.

Still it only warms the heart to know that many of the Orthodox Temples are actually built on top of ancient Greek ones.

Some call it destruction (and I agree), I call it continuation
