What about Flat and Toroidal worlds?
There is anything confirmed about these kind of worlds coming back in PTW expansion?
Flat Worlds, essential for local Scenarios, imagine the Russians invading Portugal in the classical Civ II's Europe.map
Toroidal maps, the new concept bring by CTP series, only useful for random maps, is the only way to give an Spheric experience to the world maps.
Not only the East is joined with the West but also the North is joined with the South, in such a way your units can travel in any direction rounding the world without the classic civ unavoidable poles.

Well Firaxis has said that "you will be able to make your dream scenario". I guess that means that flat maps will be in PTW.

Flat maps: I HATE them (I hate scenarios too)
Toroidal maps: I don't know I if like it or hate it...I do like the idea, that north/south pole isn't useless...But I hate the thing about walking north on the north pole will make your units end up in the south pole...I'd say the units should just go half the way around the globe (in east/west direction)...Like if the world is 200 fields wide, then walking north on the northpole, will just move your units 100 fields west/east (like if it makes any difference anyway...)...

On a ringworld there ARE no poles.
What I would like to see is a hemisphere map: flat with a single pole in the center.

Yah there are, the North Pole's in the center of the map & the South Pole's at the four corners of the map.

As far as I know, it is impossible to depict the real world in a Toroidal map, because both poles get joined together.
A ring world seem to be funny but not for me
ADG, I can't believe you don't like Scenarios, they make Civ the eternal game, the game of the games, ... OK it is your opinion but you have to admit that scenarios are not incompatible with the classic game.

Not really sure what you're talking about here!
Anyway, the reason why I hate scenarios, is because scenarios makes the game too set, you don't get to do anything you would like to do, because of timelimit and such...ok, I haven't played any scenario in Civ games (Ok, I played ONE scenario in ctp2, but that one sucked even worse, than I could image a scenario would be like...Try imagine a platform game in a Civ type of game: There's only one way, and you have not much influence when fighting, since you don't choose your unit(s)...
This is what more or less kills the gameplay in RollerCoaster Tycoon. You can only play scenarios, lucky me, there were some trainers around the internet, which made it possible to win the game (So you just could play on forever, without worrying about anything)...

If those 4 letters means what I think they mean, then there's no chance to get me to play that scenario...

What?? Firaxis??
BTW, for "dream scenarios" we need to be able to control Diplomacy better along with the time scale.

It could be great to include the possibility of put pole shelf as a new terrain. This will allow a more realistic earth (north, ice, south antarctica).
Also, the connectivity of a map could be more interesting making things like from east to west, you can cross a map, but not west to east. Making special crossing frontiers and multimaping could allow something like this (just an example):
-ARDA, THE JRR TOLKIEN'S WORLD-
Two areas, Middle Earth and Aman. Aman only is accesible by elfs (set of units), if a unit reaches the end of the map and isn't elf unit or have a special wonder, it can't reach Aman.
How to make this?
2 maps (Aman + Middle Earth), a special event :
(UNIT_REACHES_END_MAP(West) & UNIT_IS(Elf_Set)) ?
{
TRANSPORT_UNIT_TO(Aman,East);
}
And all the maps, unit animation, events and similar saved in a simply compressed bic file!

Lord of the Rings?!?! Who would want to play that? My "Ladies on the Rug" idea is much better (seriously though, it is).
