Your dual-identity?
What do you do in real-life? What's your occupation?
(this poll sparked by thread suggestions regarding whether citizenry is mostly students or not; concerns whether activity will drop off due to end of summer "vacation")

oh yeah, unpaid work (volunteering) should be counted as working or self-employed, whatever best fits your description.

As a cartoonist, I can do my job in a half-hour, sometimes. Or I can spend ten hours or more... but with two machines, I can be connected most part of time. The problem is... I'm not a good player, my english sucks and my only possible contribution is my famous "high-resolution world map" (you can find it here ) .
So... I'm a little useless...

Your English is actually just fine.
This is an off-topic question but where does Apolyton get all those quotes and facts that you see while your post is processing? I just got one that said if every Chinese person jumped off a 10 foot platform ten feet of their coast at the same time it would create a tidal wave that would destroy everything west of Nebraska

The package came with a whole load of quotes already included. The admins have added quite a lot more since. There used to be a thread in the 'Apolyton Community' forum (maybe it is still there) where you could make suggestions for new quotes to be included.

Full time employed, with regular hours.
Night grad school, irregular hours.
Ceramics/pottery, whenever I have free time and my studio calls and I can get dirty....
Archiological dig, local (700 year old NA indian village) - volunteer coordinator 1 day / month.
Girlfriend / fiance, often.
Computer games and a good book fit in about here. Divided equally (depends on if any good books came out receintly).

Self-employed/ business owner.
I have a lot of flexibility, except that I am responsible for several people and have to see to regular hours being kept.
Subject to sudden unavailability due to crises. The IT industry is good for that.

I usually teach people and also do my own research on the side. Right now it looks like my mornings will be free but the afternoon might be busy. Of course that could change and I might have to work during the day, most likely if I did it would be m,w,f or t,th. But everyday is always a possibility, thats why I didn't run(also the candidates were all very good and deserving when I got back). I'll know more in a few weeks. Still I will be able to play and post, just might not be able to attend turnchats, if they still exist that is.

Completing Honours at University and eyeing up a PhD for next year. Part time working at the University, multiple sports activities, oh, and lashings of parties and alcohol (you're only at Uni once ).
I have a two week "vacation" from next week, tho', so chats, threads etc won't be a problem over that time.

We are determining the effects of the recommencement of the North Hemisphere school year on participation within the game. It looks like a helluva lot of us will suddenly have little time for the game.

As MrWIA said...
Quote:
|
We've established that our active citizenry (those replying and voting in the last few days) are composed of roughly 50% students (whether high school or uni or college or whatnot), many of whom will likely see a drop in their ability to participate when school starts up again (for majority of NA and perhaps Europe, begins soon).
We've already noted that ministerial responsibilities and time commitments clash with real-life commitments and are preventing many interested people from running. This establishes that we *may* have further difficulty in filling positions once summer vacation for NA ends. Further support for moving to turnthreads instead of turnchats, or as a basis to promote and promulgate further discussion as how to improve participation in light of real-life obligations.
Another way of doing so might be just to inquire how much time people expect they can spend on the C3DG game in the upcoming year, but perhaps this method makes the poll more interesting. Furthermore, it indicates priority and flexibility of the real-life commitments and a clue as to the competing interests of our participants. Job demands, school schedules, or the party life of univ/colleges...
Unless I'm seriously mistaken in my worldview, if we discount addictions (such as those of UO players), obligations in an online game will always take a back seat to real-life obligations and more palpably interesting activities.
The one area I would change if I were to repoll would be to inquire about other obligations, such as familial duties whether filial, spousal, or parental. The poll gives lots of information (if we take certain assumptions based on the social and cultural mores of "the West") in terms of occupational time-use but failed to inquire about the other strong obligations of life.
|
Originally posted in another thread as to why this is not spam.
GodKing had a good idea with his posting of his time-commitments, but since not everyone wants to post in such detail, the poll will have to do for now.

You want detail?
I work currently 5:30 Am to 3:30 pm (mountain time, don't know GMT at the moment). 1/2 hr drive home depending on traffic. Evenings are pretty free, spent helping my wife of seven years with our two sons, one 3 years old, one 2 months old. I have a church meeting each Wed evening, in addition to Sunday afternoon. Sunday evenings are spent visiting family members. I regularly get up at least an hour early for work for some free time on the comp. I also get some time at work, as you can tell, for internet. We try to get out as a family at least one night a week, but are pretty flexible which night that is. I expect things to change somewhat in October when my wife goes back to work and I am alone with my son's three - four times a week. My wife works a night shift with rotating days of the week, and I will not be able to predict what days those will be.
