I imagine that there would be a mad land rush. I'd probably move to Canada.

I'd wake up very wet, sloshing around in the Atlantic, wondering where the hell the country went.

Hmm, half the Mexican population would be gone too you know.

And if you mean the whole United States land mass just dissapears and there is nothing but a chasm left ...then the other half of the Mexican population would be lost too, tumbling in as they reported for their next work shift.

There would be a new superpower.. maybe few. I think we, finns, would take the lead and show the rest of the world the new way. Even in Africa it would be mandatory to learn skiing and skating in school.
But don't worry.. I like it better when my murrican friends are in the sticks.

not for a long while. china just doesn't have the amphibious forces to take over an extremely heavily fortified island.

Quote:
5)North Korea may invade South Korea

- North Korea will attack South Korea, get stopped cold and then backstabbed by China.

not quite. in all actuality, north korea would probably not try and invade skorea, because it realizes that it has zero chance of success. skorea is among the most heavily fortified and most rigorously defended nations in the world, and nkorea realizes this.
also, i'm quite sure you guys don't realize this, but there are a lot of hawks in the skorean military-- enough so that if the us weren't there, you could bet some of these hakws would probably actually try to invade themselves...

It really does depend on the manner of 'disappearance':

Does only the government disappear, leaving each state as its own nation, or perhaps total anarchy?

Does the infrastructure disappear, leaving the population?

Does the population disappear, leaving behind the infrstructure?

Do both disappear, leaving the landmass in its 'natural' state?

Does the landmass disappear, and is enough water 'magically' created or removed to not effect sea levels elsewhere?

Are corporations based in the United States assumed to re-base elsewhere and maintain their other holdings?

Have I provided enough questions?

The most like case of the US 'disappearing' would be a space-time discontinum, then the area hit by it would be set either forward or backward in time.

Well, we haven't considered the case in which the US has morphed into the Great American Empire in the future.

2) Israel fghts for its life, without the US over its shoulder it decimates the Palestinians and fights off arab invasion.

3)China would invade Taiwan

4)India and Pakistan would probably go to war, though not immediately.

5)North Korea may invade South Korea

6)Columbia would fall to rebels without US military aid. (let alone destabilization of latin american countries in general)

7)Tremendous economic destabilization throught the world.

This is all the major stuff I could think of that could potentially happen at the moment. I am on my way to bed, but shall be interested at the responses I see tomarrow - I am sure of it.
You say it like it´s a bad thing...

I was thinking along the lines as if the US and its land mass/population/infrastructure just disapeared. And as not to disturb ocean levels, yes, there would be water to replace the vaccume left behind. The complete disapearence of America includes those corporations over sea that are owned by Americans as well as American soldiers/citizens that are over seas as weel. In an essence, everything directly ties to AMerica just vanishes (including me!! ).
Some interesting responses so far...

What about cultural impact? Will the contributions of Hollywood / NYC / Motown etc. be remembered?

THe last 60 years of America has been a good thing overall. America's last generation (my parents, etc) have created a world that was actually stable for once. There were no massive world wars. They eradicated all sorts of diseases around the globe (Polio comes to mind). And generally the influence of USA has been a good one.

Now back to the question. I think the world leaders would all get together and sing songs around a rainbow and talk about the future. Then, one madman riding on a scud missile will kill them all. And the Scud-Man will have conquered the world. Because America never came to help.

The United States would in fact dissappear - from the world stage, that is -- if we elect as president an isolationist-pacifist. Some think that this means any democrat. But FDR, JFK and Clinton were hardly isolationist-pacifists. In fact, I know of no politician from either party who today is isolationist. The last one who ran for president was McGovern.

United States will always be a big dog. It might not stay top dog, but it will always be a big dog. Look at it even before USA was even powerful. early 1900's teddy Roosevelt built a fleet and sailed it around the globe. The Europeans were shocked at how the modern and flexible the fleet was and raced to catch up. (especially Britian and germany). So we will always have influence.

America will always be a Big dog.

People have short memories, and since Germany isn't doing anything currently to piss off the world, I'd doubt people would just start hating them.

I'd say the role of "Most Shat Upon" would fall to the Brits, naturally.

What are you talking about?

Britain already had the best navy in the world at that point, and it had nothing to do with keeping pace with the Americans. In fact, it had everything to do with their nervousness of German unification and military might. The Kaiser built up the German fleet to counter the British, not the Americans. And it led to a naval "bigger d*ck" contest. The American fleet had nothing to do with sparking it.

Some think that the United States is the Babylon in the Bible (spiritually speaking). If that is the case then this is what will happen:

Rv:18:1: And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Rv:18:2: And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Rv:18:3: For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Rv:18:4: And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
Rv:18:5: For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Rv:18:6: Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Rv:18:7: How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
Rv:18:8: Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
Rv:18:9: And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
Rv:18:10: Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.
Rv:18:11: And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
Rv:18:12: The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
Rv:18:13: And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men.
Rv:18:14: And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
Rv:18:15: The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
Rv:18:16: And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
Rv:18:17: For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
Rv:18:18: And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
Rv:18:19: And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
