What's your favorite depressing song?
For me, Pink Floyd's "Hey You" wins by a mile, although Billy Joel's "Captain Jack" deserves honorable mention, as does Metallica's "Fade to Black."
(No reason to make this a poll, since regardless of what options I put on it, two-thirds of the votes would still wind up in the banana category...)

Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber.
Or anything by Nick Drake, since all of his stuff is damned depressing but very good.

I would say "Avec le temps" by Léo Ferré. It's a bit cliché, I know, but its a great song. On a lighter note, I would say "Don't go home with your hard-on" by Leonard Cohen.

Speaking of S & G, " I am a rock" is a really good depressing song....
And from that era....."Catch the Wind" or "Lalena" by Donovan are really good blue tunes.

 @ Haupt. Dietrich
Whenever I feel depressed, I always end up listening to TIAMAT and KATATONIA (the metal band), they have lots of nice, depressing stuff
Besides those, I really like the lyrics of SOFT CELL - "Bedsitter":
"Sunday morning going slow; I'm talking to the radio;
Clothes and records on the floor; Memories of the night before.
Out in clubland having fun; And now I'm hiding from the sun;
Waiting for a visitor; Though no-one knows I'm here for sure
Dancing, laughing; Drinking, loving; And now I'm all alone in bedsit land -- my only home.
I think it's time to cook a meal, to fill the emptiness I feel;
Spent my money going out; I've nothing; I'm left without.
Clean my teeth and comb my hair; Look for something new to wear;
Start the nightlife over again; Kid myself I'm having fun.
Dancing, laughing; Drinking, loving; And now I'm all alone in bedsit land -- my only home.
Look out from my window view; I've really nothing else to do;
Read a book and write a letter; Mother, things are getting better.
Watch the mirror, count the lines; The battle scars of all the good times;
Look around and I can see a thousand people just like me.
Dancing, laughing; Drinking, loving; And now I'm all alone in bedsit land -- my only home.
I'm waiting for something; I'm only passing time."

Blue on Black - Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band - is a recent one that i like.
Sorry seems to be the hardest word - Elton John - was good when i was younger but now seems over the top.

Lots of good depressing songs.
Kodoku no Singal (Signal of Lonlieness) from the Lain OST
Kaze ga Fuku Hi (Windy Day) from the Escaflowne soundtrack
Komm Susser Tod (Come Sweet Death) from the End of Evangelion soundtrack.
But, above all, one I cannot belive has not been mentioned yet:
Suicide is Painless (M*AS*H*)
Wraith

I second Radiohead's creep. Come to think of it, all of Radioheads stuff is pretty depressing. Another depressing one that comes to mind is Street Spirit.

Losing it - Rush
The dancer slows her frantic pace
In pain and desperation
Her aching limbs and downcast face
Aglow with perspiration.
Stiff as wire, her lungs on fire
With just the briefest pause
Then flooding through her memory
The echoes of old applause.
And she limps across the floor
And closes her bedroom door.
The writer stares with glassy eyes
Defies the empty page
His beard is white, his face is lined
And streaked with tears of rage.
Thirty years ago how the words would flow
With passion and precision
But now his mind is dark and dulled
By sickness and indecision.
And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more.
Some are born to move the world
To live their fantasies
But most of us just dream about
The things we'd like to be.
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee.
For you the blind who once could see
The bell tolls for thee.

Hey now people, no lyric quoting, otherwise I'm going to have to bust out my "Space Ghost's Musical Bar-B-Q" lyrics sheet.

Behind Blue Eyes
The Who
No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies
But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free
No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you
No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through
But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free
When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool
If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat
No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
