disaster
Winter tiles could appear though some kind of global disaster -like those sim city ones haha- like how global warming affects certain tiles there could be an asteroid or something that could occur randomly and affect certain tiles within a limited area or on the affected continent.

No disasters, only the predectible ones (Global Warming). Why? Ask to FIRAXIS why the Civ III earth is dead.

Disasters ok but please no asteroids as they did only little damage in reality and most of them are heading away very far from the earth. But perhaps there could be an alien landing in civ III and kidnap some of the citizens furthermore the aliens could trigger a culture flip as they are also another culture.

it'd be cool if they sold spaceship parts to civs.

What was that?
I'm afraid that your betting the wrong horse!
A powerful impact happened as late as in 1908 (IIRC) in Tunguska (northern Russia without many people, thank god). Though it wasn't in the dinasour-killer-class, it was still a big thing. It mowed down trees for miles around and if it had hit a big city, that city would have been utterly demolished. Abbandoned by Nature!
Such an impact are thought to occur about one time every couple of hundred years or so. Saying one impact per 250 years, in civ3-years that means around 24 impacts per fullplayed game!
Thank god the earth is still rather thinly populated (in the real world we don't put cities everywhere like the AI in civ3, though we have spread heavely in the last 5 centuries) and around 71% of the earths surface is ocean so humans are rarely in the troublezone.
I think it should be made with a small chance of an impact every turn. When impact happens chance could decide what size the astroid should have. There wouldn't be much point I think in making it go all the way up to 10 km in diameter (dinasour-killer-class) because a civ-game without civs isn't much fun .
And on spaceships? Can't we make the individual events optional? Then you can get rid of astroids and I can get rid of UFO's
But wait, the kidnapping might solve the problems of overpopulation in my cities

You people are not really discussing about asteroid impacts, are you???
We need some more common disasters like floods (along rivers/coastlines?), earthquakes, storms, maybe even volcanos (a new terrain piece that has a tiny chance of breaking out every turn...)

yes different disasters, that was my point to begin with and yeah they would have to be able to be toggled on and off, there could be one set which could be terrain based like volcanoes and flood plains and another set which could randomly occur, like earthquakes and yes asteroids!

Very nice. We need some smaller, but more frequent effects and some larger and more rare effects. Think about it: That astroid-strike I talked about was only going to happen perhaps 25 times in a game with most of them hitting water without damage (the Tunguska-impactor exploded in the air, so it wouldn't even produce a tsunami if such an impactor hit over ocean) or uninhabbited lands! Only a few of them would ever be noticed in each game!
The idea of making some of them tilebased is good. As we already have something like that it shouldn't be too hard to make more disasters like that.

Ah, okay, that's sensible, yes, hm...
I gotta go now...
And forget about aliens. There are no aliens. There have never been any. There never will be any. You can sleep calmly. There will be no invasion! Trust me...

hi ,
we need the following options ;
turn global warming off , keep pollution on
global on , pollution on
global on , pollution off
global off , pollution off
we also could use stuff like earthquakes , fires , floods , storms , etc , ...it should result in the loss of a couple of units , or the destruction of certain improvements , ....
while we are at it , we could include some new buildings and techs , ...
example
a fire house would reduce the chance of a fire with 85%
a weather station would reduce with 65 % the number of ships lost at sea
have a nice day
edit ; typo

Yes and the MIB-improvement will reduce the chance of alien-landings.
Don't forget my idea of alien-kidnapping. Personally I'm enthusiastic about the alien-option.
But thanks to Caliban now I know there aren't any aliens I can sleep safely at night and dream about invasions.

Has someone seen to many films?
I was against it, but I give up: Lets have those alien landings but only if the MIB-improvement goes in there too!
