Nor did Nixon think of Canada when he attacked a U.S. balance of payments crisis in August 1971 by slapping a surcharge on imports. This measure profoundly threatened Canadian trade and employment, and the damage would have been magnified had the Auto Pact been cancelled, as very nearly happened.
|
So Asher it was not the NEP that threatened the auto pact. It was U.S. balance of payments crisis in August 1971....
Look just trying to teach you proper Canadian history here not the propaganda you have learned out there.
Sorry for trying, just go back to being a happy illinformed Albertan....Sorry for bursting your bubble...
Interesting enough in my 20 years living there very few Albertans over the age of 20 that did not know all this stuff. They did not buy into the governments propaganda machine. Kill-em kleen ( that's for you Loaf) must have honed his skills since I left....

Musical interlude...
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low.
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead,
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head. Feed your head. Feed your head"

As Blackice mentioned attitudes were different in the 70s. Canadians were concerned that we were just a branch office of the U.S.
Things have changed with Asia supplying more investment as economies in that region improve. As well, European companies are expanding more overseas than they did before the 1980s (This is a gut assumption based on the state of many European economies at that time).
There was also the concern that if foreign companies are pumping out the oil then profits are being siphoned out of Canada to other nations.
Oil is also a unique industry in that it is a finite resource. If we pump it out of the ground faster today, then we run out of it quicker. If exploration is delayed then it will last longer. This may not seem like a big deal today, but in the 70s there was a concern about using up our natural resources.

The counter argument to this is that Canadian companies did not have a level playing field to compete against the big foreign oil firms that had massive amounts of capital. So naturally there were no Canadian companies to replace them, but that was the whole point. The NEP was designed to foster a Canadian-owned oil companies, something that was absent from the market.
Yes, there was short-term pain (or as whatever term you want to use), but it was designed for long-term benefits, at least in terms of increase Canadian ownership of the industry.
(Going for 500, even if I have to do it on my own.)

My contribution the the CANADIAN musical iterlude:
You Can't Bring Me Down
What the hell's going on around here?
First off-let's take it from the start
Straight out-can't change what's in my heart
No one-can tear my beliefs apart, you can't bring me
You aint-never seen no one like me
Prevail-regardless what the cost might be
Power-flows inside of me, you can't bring me
Never-fall as long as I try
Refuse-to be part of your lie
Even-if it means I die, you can't bring me
You can't bring me down!
Who the hell you calling crazy?
You wouldn't know what crazy was if Charles Manson
...was eating Fruit Loops on your front porch
Time out-let's get something clear
I speak-more truth than you want to hear
Scapegoat-to cover up your fear, you can't bring me
You aint-never seen so much might
Fight for-what I know is right
What up-you got yourself a fight, you can't bring me
Stand up-we'll all sing along
Together-aint nothin' as strong
Won't quit-we aint in the wrong, you can't bring me
You can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, you can't bring me
down!
Tell them what's up rock!
You can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, you can't bring me
down!
So why you trying to bring me
So why you trying to bring
Well you can't bring me down
Just cause you don't understand what's going on
...don't mean it don't make no sense
And just cause you don't like it,...don't mean it aint no good
And let me tell you something
Before you go taking a walk in my world,
...you better take a look at the real world
Cause this aint no Mr. Rogers Neighborhood
Can you say "feel like *hit?"
Yea maybe sometimes I do feel like *hit
I aint happy about it, but I'd rather feel like *hit
...than be full of *hit!
And if I offended you, Oh I'm sorry
But, maybe you needed to be offended
But here's my apology and one more thing...Fvck you!
Cause you can't bring me down
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, no!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down!
Bring me down - you can't bring me down, you can't bring me
down!
You can't bring me down!
Suicidal!!!

Or:
Where's The Truth
Late at night, that's the time I can't forget it
Sail the darkness but this ain't sleep
Heard the sound, could it be I got the message
But the message wasn't intended for me
Can't you see there's a madman working
He's putting in overtime
Too content with the sweet scent of denial
You're oblivious to the signs
It's a struggle for the reason
But it's the only thing I know
No surprise, here's more lies and you still are wailing
What the hell are you saying
And you're fly fly flying with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth, why you lying
Truth abuse, what's the use, it's not a game you're playing
Do you know what I'm saying
And you're high high hiding with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth, where's the truth
I'm not you, you're not me, that's the difference
So you can't deny we're the same
What's the point, that's what sticks huh exactly
Take a second helping of the blame
Not a scare not a bomb not a warning
A condition that no one should doubt
There's a tick tock tick tock
Ticking in my head you gotta get out
Yet I cannot deny the reason
'Cause it's the only thing I know
No remorse, danger course, and you still are wailing
You don't know what you're saying
And you're fly fly flying with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth, why you lying
Sick in thought, disease you've caught
Is it a game you're playing, do you know what I'm saying
And you're high high hiding with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth, where's the truth
It's a struggle for the reason
But it's the only thing I know
Too much tweak, dosage leak
And you still are wailing, what the hell are you saying
And you're fly fly flying with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth, why are you lying
Set to lose, why you choose
It's not a game you're playing, do you know what I'm saying
And you're high high hiding with lie lie lying
Where's the truth, where's the truth
Where's the truth, where's the truth, where's the truth
Where's the truth, where's the truth, where's the truth
You're lying!

And:
Give It Revolution
Throughout all time and history
The world's been mauled tyranny
Now we're refusing to take it
The worst evil the world has saw
Were crimes defended by the "law"
Deny our rights and we'll break it
You got to break the chains that hold you down
Crush the tyrants to the groud
Freedom cannot be legislated
We'll bow down to no other one
The Father and His Son
They can't deny what he's created
Most wars never should have been thought
But this is a war that must be fought
We'll take a wrong and we'll right it
The greatest weapon of the fascist
Is the tolerance of the pacifist
We've got to stand up and fight it
We'll give it
You got to give it revolution, give it revolution
We're gonna give it revolution, give it revolution
You got to give it revolution, give it revolution
We're gonna give it revolution
Well you can put a bullet in my head
But you can't kill a word I've said
You got the disease, I got the solution
No matter how much or more you try,
you can never ever make this martyr die
I give it revolution
Revolution!
You could put a bullet in my head
But you can't kill a word I've said
Give it revolution
No matter how or what you try
You can never ever make a martyr die
Give it revolution
Revolution

Now back to the music:
Get up, Stand up!
(CHORUS)
Get up, stand up
Stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up
Don't give up the fight
(2x)
You, preacher man don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitter is gold
And half the story has never been told
So now we see the light
We gonna stand up for your rights
Come on
CHORUS
Cause you know most people think
A Great God will come from the skies
Take away everything
And left everybody dry
But if you know what life is worth
Then you would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
We gonna stand up for your rights
CHORUS
We're sick and tired of this game of technology
Humbly asking Jesus for his mercy
We know and we know and understand
Almighty Jah is a living man
You fool some people sometimes
But you can't fool all the people all the time
And now we see the light
We gonna stand up for our rights

RIGHT NOW
Don't wanna wait til tomorrow,
Why put it off another day?
One more walk through problems,
Built up, and stand in our way ,ah
One step ahead, one step behind me
Now you gotta run to get even
Make future plans, don't dream about yesterday, hey
C'mon turn, turn this thing around
Right now, hey
It's your tomorrow
Right now,
C'mon,it's everything
Right now,
Catch a magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
Miss the beat, you lose the rhythm,
And nothing falls into place, no
Only missed by a fraction,
Slipped a little off your pace, oh,
The more things you get, the more you want,
Just trade in one for the other,
Workin so hard, to make it easier, whoa,
Got to turn, c'mon turn this thing around
Right now, hey
It's your tomorrow
Right now,
C'mon, it's everything
Right now,
Catch that magic moment, do it
Right here and now
It means everything
It's enlightened me, right now
What are you waitin for
Oh, yeah, right now
(Solo)
Right now, hey
It's your tomorrow
Right now,
C'mon, it's everything
Right now,
Catch that magic moment, and do it right,
Right now
Right now, oh, Right now
It's what's happening?
Right here and now
Right now
It's right now
Oh,
Tell me, what are you waiting for
Turn this thing around
And?

It's not our fault, blackice, it's just that you're a pathetic divorcee who thinks he got the shaft from feminist pigs in life and have devoted your life to meaningless court dates to try to make a difference when you don't realize you're simply wasting your time with a giant mess of a "democracy". You've succeeded not only in making an ass out of yourself on a public forum, you've repeatedly said that you do the same thing in courtrooms all the time. I imagine the judge gets a great kick out of it. I wonder if you speak as well as you write?
(How was that for a troll? )

There's a difference between trying to calm down a heated discussion with a song than you bumping this up from page 3 with like 5 posts in a row of meaningless songs. Yours is what we in the business call "spam".
