I tell you that the most have 15", yet 98% would use 1024, because that's right. 15" is currently the standard, and EACH AND EVERY 15" monitor supports 1024 resolution. So the players who fall into the 2% group are users of 14" monitors.

OK, i have tried it yesterday : the scroll system allows simply to play the game.
But one question : is it normal that scroll stopped automatically after about 7 minutes of using ?
The only solutyion i found was to stop the sreen at an ideal position so i could get about all options proposed in the game, but i can't develop diplomacy...
Someone got a solution, or scroll does not work correctly on my computer ?
Should i reinstall scroll ?

Well you might try to close it and run again... I have had it running for many hours straight.
Note: you might want to set it to only scroll with Shift or Ctrl pressed, some people have it working better that way.

I have already re-launched it many times, and it's always taking end after about seven minutes of using...
What do you mean by "to set it to only scroll with Shift or Ctrl pressed" ? What shall i do precisely ?

When it's running, you right-click the Scroll Desktop button in the taskbar, and click Properties, from where you can select the option.
Odd seven minutes thing... must be a conflict.

A monitor from 1992 is seriously low-tech

It is bad enough at 800.

I have to agree... Fact of the matter is, a 14" monitor that is 10 years old and still working for someone is fine, but game developers are not going to offer 640 x 480 much longer. Sam's Club has 17" LCD monitors for under $300 and 19" CRT's for $129. I understand the argument "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but as a game player you must understand the need for a monitor capable of better refresh rates and resolutions. What OS are you running on a 14" monitor anyway?
ATI's new Radeon 9700 and Doom III are going to mark another tech shift - like it or not - whether you play the game or not. The new ATI card benches a clear step better than the current Nvidia chipsets. Six months from now Nvidia will step ahead again, and on and on. I know gamers want great games regardless of the graphics (to a point) but even graphics for a game like Civ III are many steps ahead of Civ II. Can you imagine what Civ IV will look like?
Gamers drive the tech industry forward and within a couple of years I think CRT's will start to disappear through the 19" range as LCD's start to get serious mass production behind them. Enjoy the 14" monitor as long as you can but much sooner than later you are going to have to step up to the 21st century.
Peace

Wow, I never would've thought that so many people can't support 1024x768......I have a 17", and I use 1152x864. I can barely stand 1024, everything just seems so big. In fact, I'd use 1280x960 if my monitor supported a good refresh rate, even on a 17".
Trust me, unless you have bad eyesight, get support for at least 1024.....it gives you much more desktop space. Plus, with lower res support going the way of the dodo, you would also be set for quite a while into the future, gaming wise.

My eyes are no longer that good and I like 1280 for some things. Homm4 will not show all of the interface unless 1280. Just run the desktop at the same as the game or it gets weird as you toggle out and back. I have a 21" and have for years.

Heh, cheap 14' & 15' monitors for years didn't support 800x600. In 1992 1024x768 was a thousands of dollars cutting enge thing. Really...1024x768 with your dos games? Your windows 3.0? Some cheap 14' & 15's could do the next undistorted resolution down...what is that, 320x240? I dunno. I used to have this cheap 14' and "sometimes" it could do 800x600. Other times it would go blank and I had to run back to 640x480...
I never went above 1024x768 because of the object size...and because most games (okay maybe not most but a hell of alot I have) top out at 1024x768, and there's nothing sweeter than not having to adjust to monitor for certain games.
Most games have some tag or configuration file that allows you to set the resolution before you begin...civ 3 for instance, it's a bit odd they didn't include that setting within the game, but what to do!

If you get a new monitor now, you're set for the future. Everything now supports 1024, and almost everything supports 800. So, if you get a monitor with 1280 max. resolution (looks OK on 17"), you're set for another decade at least.

In fact i must have a old-new 14'' monitor, because it just support from 640 to 848 resolution; so 1024 and superiors are not allowed.
By now, i got a change with scroll.exe : it still work just about 7 minutes, but by now it works a huge slower : strange isn't it ?

I have a 12.1 inch monitor in 1024x768! And it is just fine!
I use 1024x768 on my 17 inch monitor too!
I think it is very poor releasing a game with a max resolution of 800x600. It just shows the lazyness of the programmers.
