I think that when they code some of these things for English it's hard to do accurate translations because of the differences in grammar. Seria dificil implementar las reglas de concordancia. Al menos eso es mi opinion.

That would have to know it Firaxis, and to give facilities so that it is possible to be translated.

Alfonso, you are completely right. I owned the German version of Civ and Civ2 and the translation was just as bad. It really took away a lot of the atmosphere.

Infogrames should make sure they hire capable translators.

What I also fail to understand is how they don't seem to be able to bring out patches for foreign versions. Today I read that there might be no German patch 1.29 and I am very happy I bought the US-version. But what about those that don't understand English good enough to play an English version of the game?

Most of the game/publishing companies have no problems with that, they normally even manage to bring out the patches for different language versions at the same time as for the English ones. But not Infogrames...... *grumble*

Well... next time buy the English version if you can. Your English sure is good enough to understand it (esp. if it is a strategy game).

Seems like the translators aren't native speakers of the target language. They should always be.

Todd Hawks:

I bought the two versions, the Spanish and the English, I do not have Problem to play the English version, but it does not seem well to me what they have done with the Spanish version.

Infogrames Interactive is the place to go. They are the guys you need to go to for translations.

You need to contact them if you want to translate the Diplomacy.txt file... even if it's only Latin (Heaven forbid Infogrames Interactive would lose money in Vatican City )

Actual if I buy a localized version of a game then I expect that it is well done. At least the most obvious stuff should be fixed before. But it is poor that Firaxis can't program their boxes so that the strings could be easily replaced by other ones. IIRC the release of the German version was postponed, because they had trouble with the translation program. Even if their robot translation is very good, it must always be checked afterwards by hand. Fortunatly I did not tryed the German version...

Perhaps I should restate my point before a Firaxian is crucified over this. Firaxis only programed the game. Infogrames Interactive are in charge of the marketing and translations. Don't target the wrong people.

I repeat, that the problem of the translation, is not by the languages that there are in Spain.

Seems like they dont intend to translate 1.29f to German at least. I dont speak another language but this is very shoddy, especially considering SI Games made Championship Manager 01/02 available in 10 (ten) languages on release. Of course they have many foreign sales, but its no excuse.

A graceful example more:

In the Spanish version they translate Scout by "Batidor".

In Spanish, "Batidor" it means beater. It is a great failure more...

From what I gathered, Firaxis doesn't plan on fixing anything with PtW. It's only going to be multiplayer with a few extra civs attached.

Its an outrage!!!
This is really bad, i feel sorry for you Alfonso

And if PTW did fix the issue (which it wont) you should not have to wait again, then spend more money just to fix it. Such a big and well established company should not make such great errors of this stature.

To Infogrames. If your going to translate the game DO IT PROPERLY!

To FIRAXIS. If you promise a translation of your game, at least be bothered to get someone to check it for you to see if its up to standard. (As im sure they did over and over with the english version).

Firaxis has NOTHING to do with this. Didn't anyone see my prior posts?

Hay algun sitio donde puedo encontrar un archivo que cambia la lengua de Civ3 en el Espanol para que puedo ver estas tonterias para yo mismo?

Is there a site where I can find a file that would change the language of Civ3 into Spanish so that I can see this idiocy for myself?

This file has many mistakes. I officialy side totaly with Alfonso.

Infogrames, you must fix this. A computer can only tanslate so much, but it requires a human eye to overlook it. If you couldn't afford someone, I'm sure Alfonso would be glad to help.

Why not translate it yourself? Fix up the text yourself so that it makes sense, and doesn't look as though it been run through a translation program? I'm sure if you started this project, many other Spanish-speaking Civ3 players would be able to help.

Coldwizard (iirc) led a similar effort to convert the English version to German (to allow the Germans to play before the translated version was out). This was brutally crushed by infogreed due to conflict of interest, but here there wouldn't be a problem as you are just modifying the one version, not translating the English version into Spanish.

The problem with asking infogreed to do it is that for it to be worth their time (money), they must make more money directly from doing this than they spend. And their effort will be of the cheapest quality as possible.

So in summary: translate it yourself!
