I think that the things are fuzzy... Identities change.
French civilization is sort of product of Roman and Celtic civilization.

Persia, for example has had many many influences.
For the first time, it was the "original" Persia.
Later the Persia had a lot of hellenistic, Greek, influences.
Now the Persia/Iran has a lot of Arabian influences.

Iran itself has also influenced a lot of nations or civilizations - India, definitely. Arabians, Middle Asians I think... For example even the Estonians have words of Persian/Irani origin... Well, from 6000 BC or something

Heck no- the roman empire was much greater than the Holy Roman Empire AND the Mussolini's Italian empire;' or even Vittorio Emmanuel II's united Italia

Call the nations what they were known as at their PEAK; not at their present day situation!
1. i agree with incas.
2.H.R.E.:
a.wasn't really roman
it was more german/austrian - they just liked the "roman" title to somehow give it credibility to other powers.
b. made no real attempt to be holy
those guys were positively unholy
c. wasn't much of an empire
subordinates virtually had absoslute direct control over subordinates, had even fought wars within the H.R. E.

furthemore Iran was historical contant for the Persian/farsoi speakers by their own designation

Italian refers to the Penisula Rome (city) was on. savoy and corsica of france used to be italian states. Sardinia and sicily (after punic wars) are also part. i dunno if napoleon was born while it was italian, but some of his ancesters might have called themselves italian at one time.

Iraq is a term from the Islamic Empire (700-800AD). the modern Iraqis chose tat name to show their dedication to islam. Bahdad was a great city in babylon.

Should America the civ name be "United States" ? America also refers to the land occupied by iriquois and aztec. American could remain as noun and adjective.

england is part of Britain and the United Kingdom but Britain includes wales and scotland i believe and the UK includes Northern Ireland.

the ottoman empire is more historical than turkey, but they were known as turks. so the civ name should stay ottoman, and the adj can be ottoman or turkish but the noun should be Turks - even though the civ is ottoman.
(bosnian muslims wre referred to as turks by other bosnians referring to ottoman conquest era when islam came and that ottoman power faded so did islamic power in the balkans.)

the japanese self designation is Nippon

viking language is closest to icelandic

Ethiopia is also known as Abyssinia

phenecia and carthage are the same people

Khmer are the people of kampuchia or cambodia but i suppose they could represent all of indo china.

celts became the gaelic peoples of france, spain, ireland, wales and scotland. you could start them in ireland/scotland on an earthmap.

By your reasoning, China should be 'Zhong Guo', Japan 'Nippon'.

if you wanna call americans Yanks it's okay with me as is calling Babylon, Saddamland....

hey its a free country... well then just as long as you got the money to pay for it....

you could call america vinland.
[they fought iriquois didn't they...hmmm]

russia could be soviet union or ussr or cccp....
germany could be H.R. E. [it was germans anyway]

on a north american map for us civil war france could be mexico [it was ran by france during us civil war] but change leader to bismark~maximillian and canada could be england and russia in alaska.... Spain in cuba....

You need a Chinese dictionary, and not the ones from Taiwan or Hong Kong.

all the web translations were in chinese characters which is okay if one can read the characters, but i'm not that fluent... i'm sorry.

i dunno hindi either so i guess i can't talk to almost half the world's population unless they speak english or some other minority language like spanish/french/german/dutch/russian/dutch/etc even the we'd need those 5 dollar dictionaries....

i'm sorry, lo ciento, j'en suis desole, sin Loi, etc

ironically my doctor is chinese and i live 4 blocks from oakland's chinatown...

You can call us Italians "Romans" all you want -- I do not think many would argue; but call a Roman "Italian" and they would look at you funny because they don't know what that means.

As one of Persian decent, I like Persia better. But I would rather say Irani then Iranian too. Our neighbors the Arabs say Arabee rather than Arabian? Im not sure what real Persian/Iranian/Iranis call them selves

It had always been Persia until the 1930's when the current Persian leader whose name escaped me changed the name to Iran. It was a variation of the word "Aryan", but the reason for changing it was because the Persian leader admired Hitler and Nazi Germany and believed Persians and Germans were both descended from the same uber-race of Aryans.

I suggest you go back and read earlier posts in this thread. It was Persia at some times in its history to foreigners, that is non-Iranians. At other times, it was the Seleucid Empire (or part of it), Parthia, and so on. To the people who lived there it was Iran- Persia is simply a name derived from a province of the country, and erroneously applied to the whole territory- like calling the Netherlands 'Holland' or Great Britain 'England'.
