Avatar questions
I have a JPEG file which I wish to use as a custom avatar, but its too big.
What is the simplest method to shrink such a file with either paint or imaging, so it fits the Apolyton standards?

I don´t think you can. You need Photshop or a similar program AFAIK. If you post it here I can give it a go if you want.

Yeamans, attach it and we'll see what we can do for you. And I might add an afro just for kicks.

with paint go to: "Image - Attributes"
that comes with a window with the current stats.
Then goto "Image - Stretch", there you can resize the image.
If it's too large in bytes, just change it into a jpeg, and see what it does to the colors. But I think when you resize the picture, the size in bytes will be ok as well.
just be sure neither height or width are larger than 80 pixels.

Paint is easiest.........but it'll probably be more fun to attach it and let others play with it using proper packages.

Resizing with Paint sucks, you lose so much of the quality.

I wind up Cropping an awful lot from the sides, since every time I Resize an image it turns into mush.
I'm just lucky that my current avatar didn't require any resizing at all...

Rezoom it on your viewer program to be smaller, and then PrintScreen. , and paste it in a new file, cut the avatar from the screenprint, and then paste again in a new file, the size of the avatar you've just copied.

Photoshop or similar?!? Good lord! I would say any basic image editing or viewing tool with basic editing capabilities is more than fine. I recommend the freeware image viewer IrfanView 3.75 that also has basic editing features, inc resizing. No spyware or built-in ads.
Photoshop?

That would increase load-times for everyone on the site. Considering how long it takes for dial-up users, that is not such a good idea.

Not to mention how a bigger avatar would only serve to be even more obtrussive to the site's look and feel.

...so the biggest possible size is 80x80, NOT 60x60?

You are correct.
I resize all my Avatars with MSPaint.

Yeamans, the quality diminishes badly in MS Paint.
If you'd like me to resize it for you in Imageready, feel free to attach the original image.
