Pop-up Killers...
MarkG,
I don't ever see pop-ups on Apolyton because I use an ad-killer (I was surprised to learn there were pop-up ads on Apolyton in the first place) and I was wondering about your general thoughts on the matter. Obviously the ad revenue keeps apolyton going strong but I hardly ever click on ad banners under any circumstances and make a special point to never to respond to pop-ups. I find pop-ups like Orbitz and X-10 ads to be particulalry rude in how they force me to repsond ON MY PERSONAL SYSTEM to a change in my software. F-em all... Do you any thoughs on Ad-killers?

my thoughts?
Ad-killes are Site-killers
pop-ups pay based on the views. you dont have to click in order for us to get something. if you kill pop-ups you're passing on our cost to provide you this site for free to the other visitors...
clear enough?

Not to speak for Markos...
I asked about his thoughts on ad-killers. I use Opera 6.0.3 for my browser and an ad-killer I won't mention by name. I don't use Mozilla though I would be interested in hearing comments on people who use it and have experience with Opera. After switching from IE 6.x I won't go back. Opera is so much nicer in how it handles multiple open "windows". I also love the fact taht I can easily do a Google search by simply typing a "g" in the address bar followed by my search querry and go right to Google... Anyway...
As a follow-up to Markos' reply, I disabled my ad-killer and played around with verious forum styles. I didn't get any pop-ups until I switched to Light-Ultra Special-Civ 3. I tried all of the Civ-3 special styles and a few others to see what the differences were in appearance and encountered no pop-ups except for the one noted above. I have no idea if that is good or bad as far as Apolyton is concerned but in consideration of the hard work and outstanding content that Markos and everyone else at Apolyton provides, I excluded Apolyton.com in my ad-killer so whatever pop-ups there are will not be blocked. Keep up the great work Markos!

Kindbud,
thanks for killing your ad-killer
you got a single pop-up cause we're not a warez or a porno site or one of those other gaming sites.
With the ultra-special styles you will get the grand total of 1 pop-up every 6 hours

This means if just the pop up is loaded you get paid, even if I close it before its loading has finished. WOW

That's good. If there were to many I would use one. But to be honest I would miss the banners.

From my experience only if you use cookies (actual I didn't test this) and if you are logged in.

kindbud, i wasn't aware you needed an adkiller in opera.
i use opera when i'm at home, and there is an option:
file--- >quick preferences--- >refuse pop-up windows
that takes care of all popup advertisements, leaving just the banner ads around. so i'm wondering-- markg, which one tends to be more profitable to your site? would it hurt your site financially if everyone, say, just saw the banner ads instead of the popups/popunders? or are the banner ads just click-through?
and as for searching with google in ie or mozilla: if you go to google.com and look under "tools", you'll find utilities/plugins that you can install that do the same thing. or, you can go to windows, download tweakUI, and play around with the default search keys.

the pop ups on the default style are awful.
Basically it's the same things over and over, and they run minimized so all of a sudden you look down and there are 7 ads running that you have to close
Do I really have to change my style to not see them?

I have Mozilla and used to use Opera. Opera seemed to load pages like ESPN and other IE featured sites poorly. They looked bad. Not to mention Mozilla's built in script popup killer as well as other features that make it supperior in my opinion. Plus, I never liked Opera's ad at the top.

Opera's not free. that's the big thing. you get a free download with the banner, or you pay and get it without.
Opera also has rendering issues with certain sites, either because a) the designer was lazy and didn't conform to HTML 4.01 Strict or b) Opera's rendering engine renders some tags differently.
that's why.
and besides, all of Mozilla's new features, they ripped from Opera.

I don't read, pay attention to, or otherwise respond to internet ads. Never, as in "not ever". I do not currently have any ad-blocking software activated on my computer. I *do* have some though that I *will* activate again if driven to it.
When pop-ups (and unders) come up every time I post, that is too often. I've abandoned otherwise interesting internet sites before, and I can do it again.

I just got an ad that would not be clicked away:
It would not go away even when I clicked it off!
-----------
Interesting, even when I posted the file site, it does not show up...

OK, I just changed my "style" of seeing the board. I chose "Light".
So, explain why I should give up my ability to know who posted last on a thread in order to escape a pop-up ad...
What's the connection? Why should one cause the other? An inquiring mind wants to know.

Q,
Thanks for the heads up on Opera. I didn't know it had that option. I was already using an ad-killer when I gave up on IE and just continued using it when I started using Opera. Opera gets even better!
Also, I use the Google toobar at work and i like it just fine but there is something nicer about not taking up extra screen real estate for those features. I can't remember using that Google toolbar for anything other than searches.
Finally, on using TweakUI, I had seen a piece either on Call for Help or The Screensavers on techTV about using TweakUIand XP to make just such a change and it seemed awfully complicated - much more so than in Win 98 so that is something for me to mess with down the road. Thanks for the tips though!
