So bad diplomacy/dialogs are so poor in this game. The mechanics are excellent. I tried a custom-made mage, and combining spells, enchanting items looks like fun (when I get more money and better at enchanting, but, well, I will just have to play more ). Alchemy seems a bit less fun. I find lots of components with one cool effect, but can't find another one with the same to make a good potion at 40-42 in alchemy skill. Hope that gets better later, as I don't want to spend my free time building restore fatigue potions just to sell them away to buy more bread and forage dog meat.
It took me quite a while before understanding the architecture of Vivec. I also found myself unable to enter some rooms because a goddamned blessing made me levitate!
The story sounds good but very diffuse.

Most ingredients have four effects, but you can't see all of them right away--you've got to increase your Alchemy skill in order to see more effects, IIRC, once your skill is at 75 or 80 then you can see all four effects of an ingredient. You can experiment with making potions in the meantime, though, since you don't actually need to know the effects of an ingredient before making a potion using those effects.

Not cheating as much as it could be. With the exception of the fact you might find out what ingredients you need before you found any instances of that ingredient, the potions FAQ I found gives you no knowledge you could find just from going into some alchemy and combining all the ingredients you have in pairs without making any potions.

actually loin I thik its only around 55 or 60 to see all 4 effects, unless I'm mistaken.
There seem to be only 2 items that have an effect with no match and the one I remember off of the top of my head is vampire dust, which had the effect of vampirism.

Are there steps up to getting all 4? Because I must have a skill around 40 or so, and I still only get 1 effect.

It increased in steps for me (I started out seeing 2 effects since I had a focus on Magic and had a skill bonus from being a Breton, then worked up to seeing 3 effects before seeing all 4), but I was seeing all 4 before patching the game. I'd assume that they didn't change this at all with the patch, but I dunno for sure.

I just keep eating stuff then. At least I've finally realised that "Drain" isn't permanent - that increases the amount of stuff I can eat safely quite hugely...

I think it is what quests you do
maybe in combination with level, but I know that I started seeing more after doing cult quests despite my alchemy not going up

So far I have two charaters going... a Warrior and a theif. I started with the warrior, with the idea that combat tend to simple enough, and I wanted to get use to how Morrowind works.
My theif is basicly done with. Only because I'm suffering blight with 0 personality (temple and Imperial Cult can't cure me)... and the fact that I murdered and stole everything from Seyda Neen and living in the cave with the slaves that I took over between Seyda Neen and hla Oad (I freed the slaves).
My warrior is currently living in a hut in Ald-ruhn (some woman dark elf tried to kill me.. so I killed her and moved from a house in Balmorra (that Orc woman's house that I had to kill) to there).
Oh, and if I EVER have to go back to Vivec again I'm going to scream!

I think magic is pretty cool. Combining spell effects (like fire damage + soul trap to finish an opponent without bothering about their living longer than the soul trap spell) is great.
How does stealth work? I tried stealing a paper on a table while invisible and got seen anyway (and, which is worse, attacked). Admittedly, I have very poor stealth skills. Still, I was invisible and she was looking the other way so how could she see the paper disappear?

If the "stealth" icon is not activated, then people might not necessarily see you but they'll hear you or see your handiwork. Next time hold down the stealth button (it's Ctrl on my keyboard), and don't take the paper until the "stealth" icon comes up.
Also, stealing might negate your Invisibility spell. I know attacking or spellcasting certainly does...

Stealing is hit and miss for me. Some days I'm extremly lucky (like taking stuff from boxes outside right under the guard's noses) and other days it's all hell.

Stuff in boxes and urns outside (unless attached to a stall) doesn't usually seem to belong to anyone, so taking it isn't counted as theft. This is particularly true of alchemical foodstuffs.

I don't know about that Chowlett, the guards in Vivec take exception to you pilferring crates outside, yet in Blamora they are very lax.. maybe the cantons in Vivec are considered "indoors"?
My alchmesit has found that the "dark" side is the easiest way to aquire ingredients.
What I found is fun, is standing in a dark corner of a room with stealth on, and using telekinises and emptying a room under the nose of the occupant. This is helped by using a chameleon like ability, to increase your sneak ability.

This game makes it very easy fo anyone to be an alchemist.
Spoiler ***
When in Balmora, use the mage's guild teleport to Caldera. In the mage's guild in Caldera go up the tower and all of the equipment, at master's level is waiting to be aquired.

Stealing DOES, with cetainty, negate invisibility.

YES! Balmorra is a theives paradise IMHO. Don't steal in Ald-ruhn, there are enough guards out there for a full army. I learned that when I was clearing out the boxes next to that Hunarai's house that I "aquired". I thought I owned it now.
Vivec is all indoors. Those ordinartors are total losers. I finaly got them to stop calling me scum... by wearing that personality enhancing helmet (can't recall the name).
Quick check:
My warrior nord is already at level 10, and I'm at the point for the main story line that I may be the Nerever incarnat. Should I continue or should pause awhile and work myself up a few more levels?

So you've spoken to the Wise Woman at the Urishalka (sp) camp, and that's it so far? If so, then go ahead and do a few more things in the Main Quest, since there are some very nice goodies that you can pick up in the early-middle quests that'll really help you out. (Take care of any other obligations first, though, since you'll need to focus all of your attention on the Main Quest for a brief period once you continue along it.)

Figures, invisibility's pretty worthless all around it seems. I made a "Protection" spell (confers invisibility to somebody else) so that I wouldn't have to worry about my charge being attacked while I was on escort duty, but it was completely worthless--they still got attacked. Pleh.

I wish I read this.... because now I just finished the 6th House base north of Gnaar Mok and suffering Corprus!
I actualy had to look at the Morrowind message boards for help (this is the first time I actualy had to get a hint, normaly I don't ask for help. I don't even look at the map that came with the game ) and from what I gather, I need to find this guy named Fyr. WHERE IS THIS GUY?

He lives in Tel Fyr. You'll need a levitation spell or some levitation scrolls/potions in order to visit him. (IIRC, Cassius might give you some levitation potions when you come back to him infected.) You might also want a water walking spell or scrolls/potions, since there's no way to use Fast Travel to Tel Fyr. (The closest you can get is to Fast Travel to Sadrith Mora or Tel Aruhn.)

I have acquired an interesting artifact - the Sixth House Bell Hammer - by virtue of sticking my nose into an interesting cave I came across.
Is this a Quest artifact or simply another weapon?
... and do the Bells do anything other than Ding, Dong - it looked like a puzzle, but as I had no clues I could do nothing sensible... ????

I'm pretty sure that it's simply another weapon. I've never found a quest in which you need to make use of the hammer.

I'm in the same boat on this one too. There might be some sort of bonus item or easter egg or something that you can get from manipulating the bells, but you never need to do anything to the bells in the main quest.

So, any talk about 'Tribunal' here? The new Morrowind expansion?

I sell the hammer... or at least try. Not too many people have that kind of money to give me for it.
I played baytoven (I know, I screwed his name up, but you know who I mean ) on those bells. Perhaps if you play to the tune of the morrowind theme song, you might uncover an easteregg.
Loin, I figured it out, thanks. I swam, since the potentions to water walk only lasted a few seconds a piece .
