Where to explore??
first look here to see where we are: (drawn by TKG, i draw much prettier )
We're probably at the northern "here", between the Freshwater Sea and the ocean.
And this is our current location:
There is only 1 scout, and 2 colony pods, here's my suggestion, based on some of the discussions here.
First we go for the pod directly north of us, the we keep heading north, towards the ridge, there should be good rainfall on the west side of that.
In case we get a rover from that pod north, he will go either east adn then south, or north-west and then turning to the west.
This would have to depend on where we place our second base.

My attempt at a map, based on limited HMoP experience...modified from Vlad's map, with the known terrain in the pinkish color, my projections in the darker grey, with the Freshwater Sea in blue and the Ridge brownish.
I haven't played on HMoP for about a week, and that was only briefly, so I'm not sure how accurate this'll be...
EDIT: If I'm wrong/inaccurate about something, oh well. It took me MUCH too long to do this ( ), so it probably won't be fixed/updated.

According to the MoP poster map from the planetary pack, there should be a number of pods immediatly to our north and west. After that, while the northern sections have better settlement opportunities (Though we should probably surround the Freshwater sea ASAP), the closest cluster of pods is to the south-west of the sea.

Since there is no need to fear drone riots, may I suggest we send our New Apolyton garrison one tile south to explore and then one tile west to pop that pod?

Edit: I see we have results from the first five turns. I think we should keep the scout going north and send the Unity Rover in an arc to the Southwest from the monolith and then curving down around the Freshwater Sea (if that is indeed the body of water to the south).

Hmm. I would have sent the rover further south than your red line in Option #1 proposes. If that is the Freshwater Sea to the south (as seems likely now that we've confirmed the northern coast goes straight up - does the HMoP have anything else that looks like that?) then I think the rover should go all the way around it's coast and then follow the ocean's coast East once its finished.

option 2, i suppose in all options the scout and rover roles can be switched, so that in option 1 the scout will go southeast, and the rover north
edit: this what you mean Echinda?

Yeah - Option 2 is what I was thinking.
Does anyone know if there is a jpg of the Map of Planet available online anywhere? It would make lunch break strategising easier for us working stiffs.

I don't have a complete map of planet, but rather a shot of the Freshwater Sea and the area south of the Pholus Ridge. Our current base location is highlighted by the cursor.
I'd suggest exploring the perimeter of the Freshwater Sea (going counterclockwise from that pod SW of New Apolyton) with the rover, whilst going north with that scout.

I agree with option two as well, for a few reasons.
The rover stands a better chance if we come across mindworms in the north.
And, we would be better off expanding around the freshwater sea at first, to take advantage of the resources around it.
I think a city placed strategically and conveniently on the spot between the freshwater sea and the actual ocean would be a good idea. But that is something for further discussion -later.

We NEED that Unity pod near our base, the rover can get it, and I am all for exploring the Ridge and colonising it.

What I told to TKG I also tell to you Vlad Antlerkov:

TKG (or Vlad), please remove that picture of our starting location. I would like to have at least *some* fun with the exploration part. It is forbidden to play ahead. That includes having a look at the Map of Planet with the special purpose of searching for the best colonization sites.
|
Please!

Does this mean Vlad knows who ended up where? I don't see how we can avoid serious spoilage for everybody concerned, then.

EDIT:
about option 1 for the exploration. we will be moving the rover over already discovered terrain may i suggest moving it south instead of east via new apolyton??? this way we get a bigger world map sooner...!

Any pod can have mindworms, the sooner we get it the better.

yes but not with the garrison? only one or two pre-boil mindworms are enough to take on NA

For now i would like to direct anyone interested in exploring to this thread where the savgame and screenshots are posted, to get an idea where we are.
I'll have some time later today to work out several plans for our scouts.
It is likely that the rover will continue around the Sea and the scout will move up, but west of the Ridge, right now it looks like it is East or right on the Ridge.
