Actually it was also called "The Fatherland" until WWII.

Are you sure that Rodina had always been 'the Fatherland' until 1941?

That's what I have heard from several sources. Stalin changed it to contrast Russia from Germany according to them.
Rodina IIRC means birthplace. Otchizna means father-place. Both are feminine nouns interestingly. Neither translates exactly as motherland or fatherland, and they are not exactly opposites. Anyway, it looks like both terms are used pretty regularly, and to be honest I am not aware of what the subtle and not so subtle differences are in usage. Any help from a native speaker of Russian?

this is what'll happen, because americans don't like to remember~
20 years from now, somebody will say something, threaten to sue. they'll change the name to something unoffensive, like: "Day of Remembrance" or "World Peace Day" or some such.
40 years from now, it'll become yet another one of those somewhat ignored federal holidays which always occur on mondays-- school lets out, federal bureaus shut down, etc.
60 years from now, it'll be one of those three-day weekend sales blasts that the department stores like sears, macys, dilliard's, riches, etc., all have such a ball with.
god bless the usa, no? we all want to remember, but we really don't.

Now, now, you can't go taking all the credit. It was liberals and feminists too.
I think they've got the Godly Veil of Protection back up now, but only over parts of the South and Orange County.

Nah I also heard that strikes are very likely, as some intelligence tells, on Sept 10, 11 or 12. I will surely take a moment to remember the thousands of people gone...

It's true though -- apparently, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are the seers of truth in everything, in spite of their lunatic qualities.

Our culture is fixated on the immediate, and looking towards the future. The past is gone. This is the major differen between us and the rest of the world. Their past lives with them in the present.

Chris, an old Jewish man is driving down the road when he gets a flat tire. He says, "First the Holocaust, and now this!" In other words, humor is one of the ways we deal with the horrible.

I think the attacks were truly a great tragedy, and I'm all for remembering those who perished or suffered in other ways (injured, lost loved ones, etc.). I just think that the media will make a mockery of it, and that too many people will find a way to turn it into an American chest-thumping event.
