Seeking advice on creating my own graphics !
Inspired by a couple of alternative Title Screens that are in the downloads section I tried to create my own froma photograph I took of the Athenian Acropolis from Phillopappou Hill. I thought other players who tenbd to play as the Greeks might appreciate having this available to them.
First attempt, converted it froma .jpg to a .pcx, made sure it was the correct size and added the Civilization III title. But all I got was a black menu screen with the options showing up as a column of dots with text that showed up when the cursor moved over them.
Second attempt, converted the original image to 256 colour and tried again. Same result.
I want also to do some more ambitious graphic changes, new or alternate versions of units, etc.
Advice please.

All I know is it has to be 256 color PCX with the last color or colors in the palette unused in the drawing, the last color is the transparent one, not sure if there are others.
You may be able to have it a difernt size as long as it fits on the screen.

For the tile graphics in my mod, my palette has the first 2 entries as teh transparent colors. This is also the case for wonders splashes. I haven't tried the title screen, but I'd assume it's the same.

I use PSP for editing graphics. The last 2 colours are the transparent ones.
Open up a (working) graphic file from Civ3, check in the pallet where the 2 background colours appear. Make sure that the colours you want to be transparent appear there.

That should be the safe way to do it for any graphics program.

I just found a book in my local library published this year by Popular Science Mag titled 21st Century Soldier.
It has some excellent photos and computer-gen drawings that would be perfect for creating new units(current,next-gen,and future planes, uavs, armor, ships,
weaponry etc)
