Ignorance isn't the issue, it's the immediate reaction of the viewer to the banner. You don't get the opportunity to educate them before they see it...
Maybe a better option would've been a banner competition...

No, that is mainstream.
By the way, did you guys hear that Siemens was about to launch a range of gas ovens with the brand "Zyklon", but dumped the idea after protests from jews.
What were they thinking?

Interesting. 5 pages of responses yet only 25 votes.
MarkG, are you trying to test perceptions or increase sales?
There's a show-biz saying that goes, "Tragedy plus time equals comedy." I find it interesting that we can joke about Jim Jones/KoolAid and John Wayne Gacy, but light-hearted references to the Holocaust seem forever out of bounds.
As I stand firmly with freedom of expression, I would suggest that the subject banner is acceptable if the site owners think it is.

Very few of these culturally challenged posters have ever seen "The Great Dictator"; I have not seen a colorized version, but maybe that still was colorized separatly

My opinion is no. Whole heartedly no.
The banner isn't in a context of parody. It's in a context of advertising. Chaplin had a political agenda for that film. You don't.

Well, Ive seen the movie, and like it. But when so many people have problems with the banner, it would probably wiser not to use it...

i'm using chaplin's parody of nazism to make an analogous statement about today's advertising, while at the same time of course promoting our store
if in the past we had oppressive goverments telling people what to do, today we have the companies doing the same thing through mass media and advertising
the idea of the banner is really simple....

I voted banana, because I don't see myself buying anything from the store, regardless of this, or any other, banner.

ps Speaking of Mel Brooks (several pages ago), every time I see History of the World, Part I I can't help but giggle (yes, giggle) uncontrolably at the end, during the "previews" of Part II, when they show "Hitler... on ice!" followed by "Jeeeeeeeewwwwwwsssss in Space!" Mel Brooks kills me.

if you would read the first thread i made yesterday, you would realise that it's the first
but i do find the redish color of it to be pretty attracting, and i'd prefer to have chaplin on a banner than bush

I find this banner hilarious, but I advise against running it. Although Apolyton is community, it's not tight-knit enough for everyone to appreciate the humour fully.
P.S. Use a parody of Stalin instead. I don't really care that he killed oodles of my relatives or that the fact that there are only 3 million Latvians on our planet is because of him; people won't have the same kneejerk reaction to that bastard.

The only funny part of the add was the warning.
I don't care, actually, either way.

Oh, one other thing, why in hell wasn't this thread in the A/C forum?
At least we'd get a +1 out of it.

I don't really care, but I thought I'd post to point out that the quote in MarkG's signature is exactly what led to my static title of Prince.

Markos:
I voted "no" in regards to the ad, but why don't you run it anyway? Sometimes the only way you can learn right from wrong is by getting burned in the process.

You'd probably offend more people than you'd care to offend.
Personally, I don't find the banner any more distasteful than The Producers or other satire on Hitler. As Brooks says, the best way to diffuse the power of Hitler is by laughing at the one-testicled shithead.
As for the film, it is brilliant and still stands as a powerful statement agains fascism. Don't you remember his speech at the end? I'm seriously perplexed at how people could say the film is now somehow offensive, it certainly isn't.

It's offensive to use someone dressed up as Hitler telling you to buy from Apolyton.
It's not offensive when it's intended as a statement against fascism.
Lots of people have relatives that died because of Hitler, and there is NO POINT to having someone dressed up as him saying "Buy Apolyton!". It's not even FUNNY out of context like this.
It's just a really, really dumb idea. It's another reason why I don't buy from the Apolyton store actually, I can't stand the stupid little ads.

So is it offensive to have a man dressed up as Hitler, singing and dancing and acting like a buffoon, in order to sell $100+ tickets to a Broadway show?

I'm actually shocked that there are 19 "yes" votes to use the banner. WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING?!?
This banner is in VERY poor taste. Plain and simple as that.
