I see more nazis in this OT forum than that banner would ever be.
Ironically some of them are some of those who vehemently oppose its use on this very thread

If that's what the show is about, no.
If the show has nothign to do with hitler, yes.
It's more of a common sense deal.
The results of this poll speak for itself, not everyone finds it as funny as some people, and we don't need to run the ad.
I thought it was so simple, but so many people seem to have trouble with such basic logic.
Mostly the Euros, actually.

I don't see much difference in The Producers and The Great Dictator, and another key difference is that Chaplin isn't even dressed up as Hitler, he's dressed up as Adenoid Hynkel.

Hello!
Not everyone has seen the movie. I sure haven't.
The point is he's using it in a banner ad, whether a minority of people find it funny is moot, clearly most people don't want to see it in an ad -- what else is there to talk about?
I personally don't find the ad funny at all, it just seems like a pointless ad with tons of potential to piss off many people. Markos is simply clueless with advertising, from the OBL stuff to the "kill a kitten" stuff to this.

MarkG you have got to be the most uptight admin I know. You block swear words, you close threads that you think are spammy, you are practically a forum nazi with no sense of humour.
I'm not offended by the banner it's just not funny like all the other banners on the site.

If it weren't for poor taste, we would have no taste at all!

The banner is very funny.
It ridicules nazism and hitler. When you see Chaplin dressed like that your mind goes immideatly to the movie and the ridicule of hitler as well as the humanitarian and peaceful message of that movie.
The line"Buy Apolyton" in its mock authoritative tone only enhances the abovementioned impression and ridicules both hitler and the nazis even more.
The only problems I'd see are those who have not seen the movie.

Most people have not seen it, and therefore it's not a good idea.

(Not gonna' read through four pages to find if someone's already said any of this. If they have, oh well...)
Should you use that pic as a banner? Sure...if you want to draw A LOT of negative attention to this site. Whenever you see something like this on the web, the loonies come out of the woodwork. Both Neo-Nazis and lawsuit-happy lawyers.
Additionally, not everyone knows who Charlie Chaplin was, nor the context of the picture. Sure, it says on the picture, "Warning: That's not Hitler!" Right, like that's enough of a warning in this day and age...
MarkG, you say fascism was defeated in 19whatever. Uh, no. It most certainly was not. The KKK, Aryan Nation, and the White Knights among (sadly...and disturbingly) many others continue the disease of fascism to this day, albeit in a less wide-spread and organized manner than Nazi Germany or Mousillini's Italy.

Oh please...It's freaking satire here. You're taking this too seriously. I suppose you wouldn't object to a Stalin, Saddam, Mao or OBL/UBL banner then, would you?
There's a time for serious objections, and there's a time to understand that humor is largely inoffensive, however tasteless it may seem. It's all freedom of speech, for better or for worse.
And if you think that little banner is offensive, you should see some of the nazi/Hitler flash cartoons people put up on Newgrounds...seriously sick stuff there that makes old Chaplin a thousand times better, even as a Dictator parodier.

JCG: Justifying it to the people here is pointless. Most visitors to the site won't sit around and hear a justification.
People see the banner. That's it, they don't hear people saying it's okay because it's from a Charlie Chaplain movie.
It's just an immensely stupid thing to put in an ad. Whether or not it's fine in a cartoon isn't the point -- he's trying to sell something and the poll here speaks for itself.
It's not funny, it's not selling anything, it's a needless opportunity for people to be offended. And yes, some people are offended by it whether you are or not.
And for that reason it's stupid for an ad.

i think i'll do that animated version with the first frame warning about chaplin and run the poll again
maybe do it in flash: give the question "have you seen the Great Dictator"?
asher and all the other ignorant of the movie people will click on "no" and get transfered to imdb
everyone else would click on "yes" and move forward to the second frame where you can then see the "buy apolyton" message and click on it for a second time if you want to go to the store
we also need to organize a "apolyton catch up on important movies" feature so that this doesnt happen again...
