Interesting Large World Starts in 2.42
All the games are at Deity level with Barbarian activity set at Raging Hordes.
They may offer a chance for a first Deity win or to break personal records.
Game 1
Playing as the Celts with a Monarchy start plus four other sciences.

Game 3
Another Map Making start this time with my favourite Vikings. The six other techs should mean Monarchy is the first research goal. One away from a decent four special start.

The Babylonians begin with Monarchy along with Pottery and Masonry. Plenty of green with the hint of a river system.

The Chinese offer a respectable prospect for an OCC game with Alphabet, Code of Laws and Ceremonial Burial. Turn 1 offers four trade specials and a hut.

Game 7
Returning to the Vikings this one can be played as OCC or as a normal game. There is a very good city spot but remember to mine hidden specials. Seven advances at 4000BC, one off Monarchy in addition to Bronze, Horse, Currency and Maps.

SG(2),
Are these also posted on the Civ site you and SG [1] have? I d/l'ed and played some of the Medium map games posted there, but there were no Large map games when I last visited...?

Of course, large map OCC won't set any records (since research takes longer on large worlds).

...you also get more huts and larger trade bonus so its hard to say.Back in "Fortnight" days,we didn't see any huge differences with the different map sizes. Some very early landings on large maps.

SG2
Thanks much for posting these starts. One of the great things about visiting here is finding these interesting starts to play. However, they don't open in 2.42 for me. I get the "This is not a save file." dialog that indicates MPG. Unfortunately, I don't have and cannot find the multiplayer version. Should have bought it when it was available....
You made those starts sound very interesting, too!! Unless I am very wrong, you may want to edit the first post in this thread to remove the 2.42 indication.

Thanks, SG2, for confirming 2.42. After trying a different tack, I got the D/L to work.
Since the last time I D/L'ed a save, I had tried out Netscape's new browser; and that caused the problem.
For some reason (conflict w/ new browser, NS7, changing the settings??) my old browser, NS4.79, can no longer accomplish a download. I got the "this is not a save file" thing. But if I D/L using the new browser, I get a good save. Go figure.
I'm looking forward to trying these starts. Thanks again......

SG(2), are these results of random starts or have they been edited? Do you know if it will work with 2.62 CiC?

Lars - I can pick that one up...
The starts are completely unedited and random - large map and (likely) archipelago - we prefer these worlds. the only form of editing is in their selection - we ran several thousand starts to get some starting tech data and these were flagged as 'looking fun' - I use the 'we' advisedly - in fact IIRC I am only responsible for about 500 of the 3,000 or so we got together

you mean that all of these saves are at 4000B.C. and the computer gave you 8 starting techs?

Yes - 8 + mining, irrigation & roads is the empirical maximum number of starting techs - we have achieved this on several occasions, but never more ...

Just be warned - getting lots of starting tech is often because the randomizer code thinks your civ start is in a bad location - either terrain or proximity to another civ. The good news is that starting techs dont count against your beaker costs for research...

The starts in MPGE were quicker than 2.42 as you don't have to quit the program all the time. The whole exercise took several weeks and many bottles.
