World Map Size
What is the biggest map PTW will allow? My dream is to play a 500 X 500 tile world map.

IIRC 256*256

More then big enough, we need pc's at 5 times of today's speed to even consider 512*512 IMHO.
It's some kind of exponential thingy

Yes, AI turns would be too long on a larger map.

Are you insane??!!

A game on such a humongous map would take ages to finish, even when procesessor speed is not considered. Just think of all the cities that would have to be managed by you and the A.I.! Plus, you would need thousands of units to conquer even ONE continent!

I myself would like to play 2400 x 1200 game, although I'd need a super-computer & alot more civs. The civswould proboly work best if they were nations, & not acual civs.

Yea I also would like the option to have that large maps, specially if you want to play a whide but not that tall map it would be usefull, like 1000x20. 1024x1024 sounds like a good max.

Yea why not, some people want that. But a 1000x20 wont take that much time, in fact its only 30,5% of 256x256.

I'd like to play on a 1500000000000000000 by 2400000000000000000 map...... Give it to me now!

Also, I would like to have 100000 years extra to live, so I can actually finish the game...

Sorry, but the largest map size Civ3 could even hope to support (without an immense amount of re-working) is 4294967296 x 4294967296. Note that this map would have 9223372036854775808 tiles and would eat up 1512633014044183232512 bytes of memory for the tile data alone.

I don't get it.

256x256 is already UNPLAYABLE, why would you need even larger map.

Do you have 6Ghz Pentium VI?

hi ,

, great that think could run on a mac , .....

no , serious now Mike , dont mind the ones that are always moaning , ..... there are some who can run a bigger map , ......

some people always have to wait hours between turns , ...... funny , the max here is 2 min , ..... with 30 civs on a 256X256 map , ...... and no , it aint a cray or so , .....

all that some people are asking is to have the option to have a bigger map , ..... for those who always complain that it shall take hours , well simple , then they should not play , .....

it has to be possible to run a 320X320 map or so , ....

you can always PM , but it would be great if you could post some details and specs here as to what might be needed for it , .....

Mike , this has to be possible , what ya say

you get a case of free beer for each extra square , .....

have a nice day

Hmm... if we assume the Earth is 256x256, and we wanted to play a game on a Ringworld that was the same proportions, how big would the map be? Anyone remember their Ringworld Trilogy?

hey wow, that would require more semiconductors than there are atoms in the universe

btw: 164 bytes per tile? why so much?
i guess you'd have to optimize the game's memory requirements to get (a lot) larger maps like the requested 2400x1200 even though it could work on some present day computers (=2'880'000 tiles = 472'230'000 bytes = 450 MB ) ... but that's of course without unit-data, etc.

i personally never managed to have the nerves (and mainly time) to finish anything over standard...

i don't know, i only know my P-III/450 wouldn't

you'd definetly need more than 512 MB RAM, i guess 1024 MB could be sufficient.
