Darts are nice because:
They fire quickly.
There are some nice darts out there, especially darts of wounding and stunning.
Good arrows are expensive, and ones you find on missions will not last. But there are plenty of good darts lying around in missions as well, so why not use them?

With darts you keep disturbing spellcasters so they won't get any of their deadly stuff of the ground.

my archer does that as well
and btw a good wizard always has a contingency spell so he's immediately immune to your darts, ya can't hurt him... i thought arrows were quite cheap heh, compared to other weaponry... what is it 200 gold for a pack of fire arrows? not much

for the record give Viconia the crom faer or some girdle of giant strength and she will be one bad ass cleric.
Sure my party was good but I couldn't resist her stats.
My party was Monk (created by me), Minsc, Viconia, Sorcerer (protaganist), and Yoshimo/Imoen, and 1 slot I used for swapping. In the expansion I settled this slot on the NPC offered in the expansion.

err yeah you are right. I changed it. You might want to change yours to avoid spoiling.
Actually I had no idea who he was. I played BG2 before I played BG1.
Before him I had a bard that was also created by me. But I didn't like bards too much. I also swapped players for their quests. Jaheira (her quests took a looooong time), Nalia, Keldorn, that whiney cleric guy, the shapeshifter, and the bard. I think I did one quest with Edwin but I dropped him. Same with that gnome guy.

yea man edit it, it's spoiler but idd the NPC is fantastic... he has a 5% chance or something that he destroys an enemy in 1 blow whenever he attacks, with any weapon you prefer!! if you're lucky you can bring down some tough opponents like that... i thought it was called deathbringer assault or something?
btw how do you keep minsc happy in your groupe that seems a bit evil, maybe you're neutral?

I just don't get my reputation above 18
but not too low either.
I usually have it at 16 or 17.

Whew. Aerie appears to now be my girlfriend. Nice.
And I'm getting to the stage where I've done all the Athkala quests I want to. I've been able to buy the Shadow Thieves' info for quite some time, but I felt like levelling up a bit first. All I have left are the Windspear Hills - which I've started - and possibly finding those boys I gave ale to Imnesvale, and when I'm finally heading back to Athkala, I might take Valygar for Haer'Dalis, just to complete that quest, then pick Haer'Dalis up again for the onward journey.

Ah, I played the game through, the first time, with a Paladin. I had Minsc, Aerie, Nalia (who I dropped when I got Imoen back), Yan (who is just so amusing ), and some other person I'm forgetting because it's been so long since I played that game (it had to be a cleric or druid).
My second game had me as a dual wielding swashbuckler with Minsc, Korgen, Viconia, Edwin, and some other guy .

I got so sick of Minsc that after a few hours I restarted with an entirely pregenerated party. No more inane comments like the appalling "buttkicking for goodness!" Missing a few NPC sideline plots was a shame but well worth it.

Oh yeah, I've been meaning to ask. If I drop someone from my party, do they retain all the items they're currently carrying? Basically, I want to put Valygar in for Haer'Dalis just long enough to do that quest, then swap back to Haer'Dalis - so can I just tell him to shuffle off back to the Five Flagons with all his tuff, and pick him up again later with it all intact?

I think they do indeed retain all their gear.
In fact I'm almost positive they do.
But I am always cautious. I took all the items I felt would be useful. If in doubt you could always put them in a container. Container items never go away. Although be careful there, because that container probably won't be accessible in later chapters and in the expansion.

The CD's would have been little puddles of burning plastic long before the end of the game had I tried to do the whole adventure with him. In contrast, I thought that almost all the voices and dialogue in Wizardry 8 were absolutely superb and really did enrich the game.

BG without minsc is sin!
his 2 handed +5 sword skillz are just too good
the most useless character in BG2 must be Aerie though
in fact my spellcasters as the shitties chars in the game, them pussies die too easily, and i also hate sleeping all the time to regain spells
lol it took me 4 BG2 days to complete the first 3 chapters LOL, and i did all the sidequest i could find...
of course, my invisible dual wielding (scimitars) ranger with boots of speed cleared most levels, got some backup from minsc sometimes too, and my spellcasters... well they were for those instances that you needed them (like special quests, or when killing that Lich near the gates for example (in the tavern))
and of course a thief for backstabbing wizzies and removing traps
i bet i could solo the game with a fighter/thief/mage
(i would have to use a lot of bows and protective spells though)

I find that spellcasters are absolutely crucial for the big battles. It's a nightmare to beat dragons without magical backup, I find.

BG without Minsc .
How could you?! He had all the funniest lines. It would not have been anywhere near the same without him!

What's the generally accepted wisdom on what a mage should put into their Contingency and Sequencer (Minor atm)?

Minsc is overrated, there are many others that are just as interesting and most importantly not as annoying!

...particulary when you roll them all up yourself. Nice balanced characters with a desire to get the job done

Minsc and Lilacor are the best NPC's in the game!!
maybe imoen but she is a wimp.
As for sequencers I never used them . I had a sorcerer and I picked those spells but never got around to using them. With the robe of vecna and some other items I casted spells superfast.
Taking on dragons and some of the tougher golems without my sorcerer would be near impossible. Same thing with some of those tough demons in the expansion at the end. But I found regular mages weren't as useful. My sorcerer easily carried the load.

same with contingency
but if your mage/sorcerer is dying a lot, contingency with stoneskin would help. I kept meaning to do that, but I always forgot to cast continency anyways. My sorcerer rarely died.

Contingency was cool when you remembered to set it up in advance. The sequencers I only found helpful when I knew what opponents were coming up. Most of the time that only happens if you mess up and have to reload.

I'm way late to this, but wasn't Edwin evil?
