Play against Sid!
This is apparently in the latest PCGamer (Nov.):
Quote:
|
Play Against the Maker
Want to put your civilization-building skills to the ultimate test? We'll give you a couple of months after Civ III:PTW's late-October realease to get in some serious practice, and then one lucky reader will be able to square off in a multiplayer showdown with none other than Sid Meier, the game's creator. We'll have a couple of other representatives from Firaxis, as well as PC Gamer's own Civ III champion, ready for the ultimate battle for global domination.
To enter, just send an email to civcontest@pcgamer.com and get in some needed practice. We'll inform the randomly chosen winner of the official challenge date, which will be sometime in late January 2003, and in a future issue we'll report the winners and losers, plus who cried and who died. Good luck.

I wonder how much time Sid has actually spent playing any of his games.

I entered, but what are my odds?
pretty crappy if you ask me.
anyway, Firaxis should let me be a ringer for them.
I could pass for Soren

I can just see Sid Meier sitting down to play:
"Mmmmmkay, where's the DOS prompt? Or can I actually launch from within Windows 3.1?"

Watch out for Sid's sneak launch attack of a stack of I.M. Picky specialised units. If they don't "approve" of your civilization, you don't get any border extensions!

I think it's just a way to get more people to buy PtW.

Thats fine and does not hurt anyone. I suspect he will just look on why an ace tester will come in to handle the action. We have plenty of people here who can make them sweat.

Possibile, considering that Sid didn't had anything with Civ2 or Civ3.

Sid is probably not good at civ3, but the other Firaxis guys would maybe be a bigger challenge..

How will we really know it's Sid who is being played against? What's the bet they'll use a "ringer"?

I can just imagine all of you now...
(Apolytonian boaster, in a whiny voice): "Noooooo Sid...Nooooo, Please don't wipe out my capital!! Pleeeeeeease..."
(Sid): Ahahahahahahahaha! You fool! You thought you could take down the immortal Sid Meier! Well, take this!
With one swipe, Sid's panzers roll into Apolytonian boaster's capital, and his civ is exterminated!

Hmhm... Even Bruce Shelley (yes, I mean BRUCE SHELLEY, the inventor of AoE) once admitted that he had no chance against some of his beta-testers...
So, somewhere out there there are always people who can teach the designers a lesson in playing their own game.
S.M. won't be an exception.

Oki, let me place my bet:
1- Sid will play Romans because it's his favourite. (look at Civ3 site decoration)
2- The other player will be Iroquois or Celts because their UUs are overpowered. Celts are even more overpowered than Iroquois because their UU has 1 more on defense and they get to be Mil+Rel!
3- Sid will get 0wn3d by a small group of UUs that cost 30 production shields, have 3 of attack and 2 of movement.

Dan Mahaga did. But if I remember correctly, Sid himself has said in an interview that his favourite civ is the Romans.
