GameLeague, ladder and clan play for Civ3 ??
I have been thinking, since Civ3 PTW is about to come out, I might open a new version of GameLeague to support the game. For those of you who don’t know what GameLeague is/was you can go to the website at http://gameleague.megaultra.com, however there isn’t a whole still going on there. GameLeague was basically a website that hosted a ladder, tournaments, and tribe play for Civ2 and CtP. The site, in my opinion was successful. It allowed many players to play against each other competitively. However, the site (like everything else in this world) was not perfect. One of the main down falls was that is was not automated enough. At the time it was created I simply did not have the know how to make it more automated. Once Kent, Frank, and I began to have less time this led to its down fall. There of course were other problems: the ladder system wasn’t perfect, it was hard to settle disputes, ect.

All of this being said, I would like to try again. I think with what I learned in the past GameLeague can be very successful. I have some ideas to do some things differently this time (improved ladder, tournaments, tribes, no banners, ect.). I want to know if there is an interest out there. Right now I am thinking of going with a model that many other similar ladder/tournament sites use where basic services are available to everyone for free, but more advanced services are available to premium members for a small fee (something like ($10/year). I know everyone wants stuff like this to be free, but expenses have to be covered somehow.

I would like feedback of any kind from anyone with any ideas. I am also interested in how many people you all think would be interested in such a site. In addition to feedback about this, if it looks like there is enough support to warrant building the site then I will be looking for input on things such as how tribes should be run and how ranks on the ladder should be calculated.

Thanks for you feedback.

Will you add support any other civ games? Or ladders for Civ2 or CtP1/2?

Sorry for taking your thread kinda OT in one foul swoop BTW :lol I would participate in such a ladder for PTW, keeps the games interesting. Maybe a different league for turnless play or more points for a turnless win. Best to let the games begin first, turnless mode could flop...

If there is enough intrest it would not be hard to include suport for Civ2 and CtP1/2. However, I question wheather or not there would be enough people who still want to play these games after Civ3 PTW comes out.

Gameleague was huge in both CTP2 (before the I.B.C. killed it) and in Civ2 MP so we have every reason to believe it will also be big in Civ3 MP. I know I will be a member.

So far that is two people saying it would work. Do you two think the idea of requiring a membership fee to use the non basic features will work? Currently I am thinking that the ladder be open to everyone not non-premium members will have a limit as to how often they can report games (a side affect of this will be a reduction in cheating), and some tournaments will be open to everyone.

Will this requirement turn people away or will people be willing to pay for a better service?

I can only wish you the best of luck. You of all people know the potential problems...

However, I'm guessing that there will be BIG problems due to the nature of PTW and Civ abilites and UU's...

Again... Good LUCK... you will need it.

What problems do you see civ abilities and UU's causing? and what do you mean by "the nature of PTW"

I could try to explain it but I think it is best described at http://gameleague.megaultra.com Basically, for the ladder you play games and report the rusults. Then the ladder ranks all the player. Tribes/Clans are similar excpet they involve team instead of individuals.

In the past you didn't. In the futrue if there are a lot of paying members, then we could offer some prizes. Or if some people can come up with some ideas for cheaper prizes, we could give those away.

Well, response to this thread isn't quite what I hoped it would be. I am still thinking I will create the site, but I hope more people will join than the three who expressed intrest here.
