Ask about Stella Polaris
This thread is dedicated for a small questions that don't warrant new threads as they are not that special or demand too specific explanations. Feel free to ask the development team about the project and issues related to it. Please also check the "Stella Polaris FAQ for Apolytoners" as your question might already been answered there. Also be patient as we aren't always here lurking for possible questions.

OK, here's a small one.
You mention something about web services in the FAQ.
What do you mean by that?
A new web site/forums or something else?

The new web services will be located on a new server, on a different continent, at a different ISP, with a new domain, with a new Stella Polaris website (there's no such website right now, only one about FreeAC) and with new Stella Polaris Forums (not seen yet).

I have a question.
About the unit system, how are you planning to implement it? Like CTP (armies), SMAC (unit workshop), Civ3 (Civ2+CTP?)?

Stacked combat will be the norm.. unlike CTP2 there wont be a small limit to the # units in an army. If you want to stick your entire military in a single stack, you'll be allowed to.
Units will be designed in a workshop from components, a little more detailed than the SMAC system.

Yes, there's going to be a tech tree. It hasn't yet been designed, but it will be done later on.

All of the details on the FreeAC forums are obviously not online now. Will these major ones be transferred to the SP forums of Poly?

The contents of FACF aren't moved anywhere. They will be erased and the mySQL database and file attachment uploads will be stored elsewhere.

We're for a large part still in the designing fase - looking at how the game and its mechanics should be set up, how it will work and everything. Also, I believe Blake is working on a very first version of the software, which has minimum functionality. I think more progress will be made once we're on our own server, and can continue things like the Game Outlook Documents and stuff.

Well, continuing Joeno's anwer.
The GOD is being developed right now too, but it's not visible. The Alpha 1 version is under development too, but I can't say any release date or deadline for it; at least not yet. The official project status is Pre-Alpha.
Hopefully this satifies you, DBTS.

1. What workshop? If you mean unit editing and creating, that will be done using suitable graphics editing software and editing the values in the text files.
2. December 2002. No further help is needed right now (3-4 persons working on it now). I can contact you in the case your help is needed in the content writing.

I don't know about the unit workshop in SMAC, but I would say no as this isn't SMAC after all.

Yes, I actually agree with DBtS. I have been reading the threads here, and it seems that there is no general plan on what the game is going to be like, other than that it will be a TBS. Everybody draws their inspiration from different games, and "pulls the blanket onto their side of the bed."
I think that we have plenty of suggestions to start making a more or less finalized plan. With such a big project, we can't just start coding without having a more or less detailed plan, and most importantly, a plan that is approved and accepted by all. We cannot just come up with our own ideas and start implementing them.
Hope we get more coordination of our efforts some time soon.

A final plan is/was being worked on by a few people, as the General Outlook thingie, but it's going a bit slow because of the webservices that are not available.

Rasbelin said that the web-site would be up somewhere during december, if I am not mistaken, so I would be guessing it would take a bit of time to work on the GOD thing (izzat what it's abbreviated is?), so I would guess some time next year? Middle of January maybe?

Back to the basics. First of all Stella Polaris isn't a clone or a game being inspired by only one or two games. If you really want to list up what games are behind StP, it would look something like this: SMAC, MoO, RoN, CtP2, Stars!, Civ II and Civ III. And no, this is not a subject that warrants a poll as that would clear stamp the game as "a free open source clone of X with several minor changes." Creativity is what matters, not how well you immitate the old.

This is indeed true. The much spoken GOD and The Exodus will indeed help to start the work. Right now I'm doing what I can.

Yes, Joeno, but more precisely it's a collection of information from this forum and old FreeAC Forums. So it will include information about the concepts that have been agreed about in the discussions. I.e. Gateway and I don't decide how the game is going to look like. We are just scribbling down what is agreed here.

Version 0.1 will be distributed to the SPDT members in the nearby future. I have to add that it won't be complete as things are added as there's something to add.

The website will be launched during December (read the date for GOD 0.1 above) as it's finished. Disparat is working on it.
