which civs seem to be the most freakin erratic/nutso?
which ones do you notice you have to really watch out for most of the time? yeah, i know, all of them at some point, esp. higher levels of difficulty. i think iroqois, germans, zulus, sometimes, in a real sneaky way, that shriveled up old raisin - ghandi ("we should not trust ghandi. he is a known cheat and liar" - where else would you see that quote?).. jerxes is a real perverse wacko too. try to limit it to 3 - 5

I don't seem to run accross the Aztecs much but they seem the least stable to me. Catherine is pretty bad too but she usually gets herself killed off so its hard to be sure.
Liz and Tokagawa seem quite stable. They are always a pain. Even when I am at peace with Japan Tokagawa is furious with me.

The Germans aren't erratic in that you know they are always gonna sneak attack you

I have yet to see any civ shoot themselves in the foot more than the French. That Joan is a real nut case, one turn she is friend to the world and before you can say "Put the crack pipe down Joan!" she is at war with everyone and getting her booty kicked.

i got to go with the iroqois - can't remember how many times, esp. early, those freaks have gone from graciously allied and kidking my enemies butt at my request to furiously kicking my butt - at least initially. mounted warriors are viscious opponents early, which is when they seem most volitile. never trust them from a position of anything less than clear superiority.

you know, that warm, fuzzy feeling of comradrey, like, "hey, these guys are really cool, solid folks. my buddies!" then, suddenly that lampshade wearing diplomatic advisor pops up, "treacherous iroqois have allied with evil whoever the freak i wqas allied with 'em against to destroy us!" "WHAT? Ijust gave those b@st@rds two techs and a luxury!!!!! Ooooooooh.....blood shall run!" (yeah, i know, wrong native american ethnic group, but fits my mood at the time!)

I have a longstanding love/hate relationship with India. For most of the game, they are my truest allies, always polite, excellent trading partners, and I can always count on them in war. Then late industrial hits and bam! they're using the ROP to sneak attack me every time. I've gotten so used to it that I make sure any units of theirs in my border at that period of time have "escorts".

I've found the Iroquois to be the most erratic. In one game they can be pretty passive, and in another they can be so nutty they kill themselves off. If we were taking a vote on the most warmongerish civs, I'd have to say the Germans are consistent winners.

Most erratic... hmm. That knocks out the predictable nasties (Bismarck, Shaka, Caesar, Monty)
Hammurabi is shockingly aggressive in the ancient age, after which he seems to calm down (or take his "medicine" - aka my samurai).
Elizabeth is a backstabbing wench. But this no longer surprises me.
Joan is similar, but tends to play nice for a long time before sneak attacking out of the blue.
I have encountered a nasty, warmongering, psychotic Ghandi... which is bizarre enough to win 1st prize. I vote India.

I have to agree with all of the response, how can I pick one... Well if I must, the latest one to irk me is Ghandi G.

The Iroqois are the worst backstabbing enemy you could have!
Rome, France and even the Aztecs are loyal friends whenever I play with them (perhaps the Aztecs aren't so loyal...the sneak attacked me once. But just once!)
I would vote for the Germans but they always make their intentions clear!

Germany, I find, is one of my most loyal allies the entire game (the other is France). The Greeks can always be counted on to declare war without provocation, but that's usually consistant. The most 'unpredictible' civs in my games are the Persians and Japanese; I can never tell whose side they are going to join or what they'll do. Most times it's the opposite of what they *should* do.

England seems to make more demands of me than any other Civ, and yet often seems to be in the worst position to do so. Russia often follows along those lines as well. Egypt/Greece always seem so neutral to me, I can't remember the last time they started a war of aggression. I kind of tie this all into my theory that a Civ is most aggressive around the time they have their UU's, and some Civs like India/Greece/Egypt, have UU's that are either unsuited to combat, unremarkable, or limited in capability, and tend to remain pretty pacifistic. Civ's with great one's, like Rome and Germany get real powerful around those times.

in my most recent game japan is acting like a complete nut I'm winning by a VERY comfortable margin with japan in second. japan approaches me for a MPP and wants 8 gpt from me. i figure, why not its just 8 and im pulling in like 400 gpt with a reserve of over 3000 and 4 turn techs (regent). so i agree. diplomacy screen closes, Japan has declared war on us. WTF?!? just based on this japan gets my vote.

I would have to say either Rome or Persians.
In my current game as the Germans, the Romans demended 23 gold from me in the ancient age. They are polite with me.
I say no and they declare war. Ceasar is so clever that he had several cities gaurded by single warriors near my borders. sigh...
He could have beaten me easily, as Rome had both Iron and 6 wine in its borders, but my archer stack encountered barely any Legions.
And this is at Monarch, lol.

Well, I think it also dependes on the enemies' level of agression (Germany: 5 [!!!] France: 1[!!!!!]), plus their cultural type (Europian, Asian etc)
Iroquis once again declared war on me after asking tribute and having being friends since the beggining!.....

Germany can be one of your best friends. The trick is to know how to handle 'em.
Don't betray them. Don't interfere with them. Don't be nice to their allies. Get into a MPP, and alliances, and FIGHT. In one particularly bloody game it was me and Bismarck against the world. He was always friendly and gracious and ever-eager to kick some ass at my side.
Funny thing, when I started to nuke the other civs (this was waaaaaaaay late in the game), I could swear that big goofy grin of his was only getting bigger...

The Persians. You never know what the bloody bastard Xerxes is up to - he can either be the nice guy next door, flood you with 'them Immortals or play nice and one turn declare war on you, taking with him half of your so-called friends.

Persians also get my vote. Game to game and within games they seem to change there attitude without reason. Others do but predictably most of the time. Americans are always troublesome, India changes in modern era to be more like Americans, Iroqouis are always arrogant and think they are better than everyone else, the Germans are bullys and push around if you are smaller, friendly if you are bigger.

Persians and Greeks always jerk me around the most, Zulus are effing t**** as well. As for the most erratic tho, its tight but possibly England. They are either very friendly or very aggressive but their mood changes with the tide of the sea

I voted China simply because they were the wacko's beside me in my last game. I took 10 of their cities over the course of the game by culture and combat (they were number 1 and foolishly aggressive when they initially sneak attacked). We fought 3 seperate wars but late in the game they accept a MPP and ROP with me (I was being attacked by the Babs).
Clearly any of the AI civs will change "personalities" at the drop of a hat. It makes very little sense in human terms but the AI isnt.

I voted English, because that old hag is always acting crazy, but in the game I'm in now, the Iroquois and Greeks are wigging out like I've never seen before. I'm playing on Emporer, small map, started with six civs (I already eliminated the Zulu), we're in the industrial age previous to tanks, so it's calvary versus infantry. I just passed the Greeks for the number one spot on the histograph, and I'm number 1 in population and just reached number one in land area. Every time I am at peace with all civs, the Iroquois declare war on me. They've dclared war on me three times, and twice we had just made a peace treaty three or four turns previous. Then, the freaking Greeks are schizophrenic. They had declared war on me twice, and were furious with me, of course. They were on another continent, so no real battle was taking place. We reach a peace treaty where I give him peace and a little cash for peace and a tech, and he is immediately gracious! WTF!!! I've never seen anyone become gracious like that.
