Just how many of you were or are on some form of psychological medication?
It seems like a lot of you have taken psychological medicines or are taking them judging by some posts I have seen on another thread. A lot depression around, bit of an eye opener really!
I've never been on psych meds - but I tend to put others onto them Mrs Horse says.
Through my blissful eccentricity, I like to think of myself as self medicating
What did you take?
What condition did you have?
If you never have been medicated for mental illness, what is your secret to keeping sane?
Does knowing me help?
You like my jokes don't you

I've tried two different SSRI (Zoloft and recently Paxil), a Tricyclic Antidepressant (Novotriptyn), and a MAOI (Parnate) in the course of my lifetime already.

Depends on the doctor you ask.
Some say moderate bipolar depression, some say dysthymic disorder, some say reactive depression.

Risperdal for schizophrenia (except that I'm not schizophrenic, so it didn't do much for me but make my hands shake), and Depakote and Prozac for bipolar. Started on meds about eight years ago, got off them almost two years ago.

I was on drugs when I was a kid, ritalin and another drug, I believe.
I don't take any drugs now - hell, I won't even take an asprin unless I'm in some really severe pain. (last time I took asprin was a year ago when I got food poisoning)

I'm currently taking Paxil, I was on Zoloft. Years ago I was on Welbutrin and Effexor. I've been dealing with clinical depression for well... as long as I can remember.

I do smoke weed every once in a while... not so much regularly any more due to a lack of supply and an overall lack of motivation when I use it regularly.

Never been on mental meds, though I've tried a few: ritalin, other speed, paxil.
I think I'm sane, although others will disagree, I certainly don't come under any DSM -IV category
To be fair I do have a pathological fear of Scientologists........ and Nuns.

More like.....why Nuns?
I did research for an article about the mentalists. They did things like phone me in the middle of the night and run background checks on me.
I could go on, but I made a thread about it ages ago....

I'd be interested to see the results broken down by age groups and location. I'm pretty much certain that there is a difference between the older and younger posters but i wonder if it's the same by regions.
I'm from a rural part of Canada and - as you might guess - not only did i never take any of these but i don't know anyone in my age group and from the same place who did.

Use of medication for psychological disorders is certainly more prevalent among the younger posters, but a large reason for this is because a lot of psychological medications have only recently been developed. A few of my relatives from one or two generations back also had bipolar disorder, but at that time the only medications available were lithium (which is very dangerous) and alcohol (or some other form of self-medication). Before their generation, the folks in my extended family with bipolar were usually insititionalized and rarely lived past their early 40's. I'm one of the first in my extended family to be treated with medication that actually works for a change, since I'm one of the first to be diagnosed at a time when medications like prozac and depakote were available.

i'm on zoloft and have been so for six years..since i was 15 and i'm 21. i was originally diagnosed with borderline personality disorder but recently i've been told i'm also or instead, bipolar. either or.
i'm better than i used to be..but things are still hard...especially the blankness.....sometimes looking at your life from the back of your head when you're out of control

What is bipolar depression? Anyway, I solved all my problems myself without medication.

It's not like medication helps anyway. It just takes away the symptoms, not the causes. Change your view of life if you have a depression.

Maniac, I'm not sure you understand what you're talking about.
I'm taking Paxil right now for Dysthymia. I've had some bouts of depression when I was in Junior High that looking back were pretty damn severe, and then my Senoir year of High School, through now has been low grade.
Sure, I can function fine without medications, but would you like it if your brain insisted on keeping things symmetrical, or planning fictious talks with people (meaning I have a one sided conversation in my head but never say any of those things)?
You can have a chemical imbalance, and I do know that various people on my father's side almost probably have or had depression, but were never diagnosed (like my aunt who lived with her parents until they died, and still lives in that house).
