2194 DOW, PBEM version

Intense turns, challenging. It's WW2, everyone loves WW2. Oh and you get the fun of taking New York with the Japanese.

Sorry to annoy you, Chris62.

I'm playing in my first two games right now, so my experience is more limited than some others. Mongols 3 is a blast, but that may be because I'm the Mongols and I get to conquer people. I'm not sure how the Chin player feels about the game.

The other game is Imperialism 1870, and I find it pretty boring. I took over from the German player about 10 turns ago, and it's just been a matter of moving trade units all around the world gigamap, picking off the odd AI city where you can.

My conclusion is that games where offensive action is possible and even necessary are more fun. How's that for an earth shattering conclusion?

All good scenarios could be fun in multiplay

if it where in english, somes of my scenarios could have some interest for multiplay
(same "power" same number of cities when scenarios start).

-Mafia FW-ToT (quick game 100 turns, 5-6 cities for each civs, known map, 4 or 5 civs dont remember)
-Egypte FW-ToT (1 of the 2 scenario, "start" scenario, "unknown" map, 3 civs)
-Antic FW-ToT ("known" map, 7 civs, 3-4 cities)
-Japan ToT (1 of the 2 scenario, "start" scenario "unknown" map, 4 civs)

Better techumseh.

MP depends on how many players, and the specific scenario.

For example, I had a lot of fun playing Hellas three player (as the three of the four Greek tribes) figthing each other and the on-rushing Persians (and the added fun of teaching the scenario's designer, John Ellis, some tricks in his own scenario he didn't know about!).

Another Ellis design that is fun MP is Colonies III, but that is very tough on the Dutch (who I am), yet it is great gaming if you can survive.

An interesting MP I'm still in with Jay Bee is his "Spanish pride", a game that is really civ-2 on a Spanish map with new units and techs, this game is interesting MP as you start with a single city and must move foward.

I tend to avoid WWII scenarios in PBEM games, because I hate the large amount of units, this is also a problem I have with some of Exile's work, so many units and the game takes forever to play (I can't imagine Harlon's Mongols as MP, it must take forever, it sure did SP).

Carl Fritz's Brown man's burden is proving to be quite good MP so far, as has John Ellis' new Bonaparte II.

Also you have to make a distinction between multiplayer and PBEM. For instance I might like Age of War or Bonaparte for PBEM but 2194 for multiplayer, since the two types of game are so very different. Namely PBEM's give you more time for more complicated scenarios and diplomacy.

In a PBEM a player plays his/her turn anytime he can and when it is complete, he sends it to the next player in the scenario's turn order. The cycle goes around for months until someone wins.

An advantage of this over realtime multiplayer is that you can take your time on your turns to micromanage and make better military decisions. Also there is time for more rigorous diplomacy (sometimes very rigorous; in some games it would take two dozen posts to get one turn through), which makes for a more interesting game. The only downside is that in PBEM it is a lot easier to cheat, and many games are killed by cheaters.

If you're interested the two main PBEM communities are Apolyton's right here and Civfanatics' PBEM forum here. You can make an attempt to start a new game or join one that needs a player.
