Hey, has anybody out there played the board game, Dune? I *loved* that game and just found it in the cupboard again.

Yeah, I played the "Dune" board game way back when. It was pretty cool.

Man, I'm really feeling my age.....I started with SMAC .
Then I got Civ2, played it a bit, and got Civ3 because of it. Now, I don't play any, and I spend my time talking with people and posting on these fora. Please don't hurt me .

My first computer TBS was something called Hammurabi, which I played on an IBM mainframe using a teletype terminal back around 1974. As I recall, the key strategy was to keep the population down by letting a certain percentage of your citizens starve to death.

I went from Panzer General to Steel Panthers, Imperialism, and then after that a whole slew of SSI games, then Civ 2, and the rest is history.
Alas, I have nearly the entire SSI library... I wish they hadn't gone out of business and gotten absorbed.

either masters of magic or x-com
I'm not sure which one I started playing first. I played them about the same time. I "got" them about the same time.

chess is a PC TBS if you play it on a PC... ... just like Civ is a board game if you play the (soon to be released) board game version of it.
mine is chess too.

Well, I played quite a few games in the 80s but I can't remember much when it comes to nemaes. I played Civ I of course so that's the one I vividly remember. Was Defender of the Crown not a mix between TBS and Adventure? I loved that game on my Amiga 500!
So long...

again you people appear not to like to read , I said even if you play it on a PC it's not a PC TBS as it's still just a board game and wasn't created on the PC, that's like saying that a movie is a TV show because you watched it at home on HBO instead of in theaters .

Hmm, on second thought Merchant Prince might have been the first TBS I ever played. I think that Civ predated Mer. Pr., but damned if I can remember...

Probably Warlords for me. I used to win without much saving and reloading each turn.

I forgot the name of the first TBS I played, but it is a game about mining the planets in the solar system, published by the now defunct Avalon Hill. The second one is called Invasion Orion.
I hesistate to put M.U.L.E. and Archon I/II in the TBS genre. They are more accurately cross-genre games.
Then there were 1940 by Chris Crawsford, Legionaire on the Atari 800, Empire on a DEC Professional 350, etc.
Railroad Tycoon is way down the line.
