Naming your units (gamespy preview)
Quote:
|
You can give units unique names to help you remember where they're assigned, how experienced they are, or just to add a little flavor.
|
i'm thinking this means we can name any unit now.
this should be fun in multiplayer, when Aeson sees a swarm of "AESON SUCKS"s approaching his cities.
(i picked Aeson because he is well known for his skill. it could have been any of you )

It sounds like it would mean that. Since they added the ability for ELITE units, how hard could it be for to add it to all units? That would be a nice feature to have.

Meh, if nothing else, would help me to keep track of the order I created units of a specific type (1st Legion, 2nd Legion, etc.)...
You can imagine the fun I'd have as the Japanese with airplane units

You will be able to name any unit at any time in PTW.

Well that pretty much seals the deal. PtW is now a must-have.
Units with distinctive names (or being able to name them yourself) makes all the difference for me in a strat game.
Empire was a good example. Without the ability to name and rename ships it would have been much less immersive. Seeing a "Battleship" sink would have had no emotional impact at all--witnessing the U.S.S. Missouri head toward the bottom always hit a little closer to home.
If PtW includes other little touches like that there may yet be reason to sing.

Cool!
After naming my capital "Robingthon" (my name is Robert) and my 2nd city "Plompingthon" (my last name is Plomp) I can give my units cute names like "Robantery"or "plompintrooper" and "robior"

It would also be nice if the computer could automatically name its Great Leader spawn units, on a premade selection list..
each unit type would have a few optional names for each civ,
this could be extended to having the first unit built given a special name.
Cavalry could be Custars Indian Raiders (dosen't bode well for its survival)
Transports could be the Titanic.
Panzers could be Rommels Tigers etc
I'm finding naming leader bearing units good already in version 1.21

yea, a lot of people have requested this and firaxis listened.
i really like Firaxis. they're up there with my favorite game companies.
sure, i've been sour over paying for PTW, but you know what? I'm doing it. I support the people that make damn good games.

That's really cool; much better than naming then in the editor. Hey, Mike, are there going to be templates for the names? For instance, I'll probably name my units something like this: 1st New York Veteran Cavalry or 32nd Berlin Elite Infantry. Is there some way to have a random name generator that can do that, or will I have to do that by hand?

The ability to name units! I'm ecstatic! I'm having a religious experience!
Yeah, I know a lot of you think its a useless frill, but I think it adds so much color to a game like Civ. Finally, you can give cool names to units that won key victories. "The ColdStream Guards", "1st Cav, 2nd Div", "Falconius' Flying Frenchmen", etc, etc.
This, more than any other aspect, is the reason I'll buy PTW.

/me is pleased about this, although he knows that after his first couple of games he'll probably be too lazy to rename any units.

Will you be able to use keyboard commands to name each unit? (I.e., name unit, hit key for 'wait' and then go to the next unit.)

This will be great! Of course, the best would be if my opponent, let's the romans, is not aware of this and suddenly he sees armies approching... "Roman Slayer", "Roman Solution" and "Apocalyptica" are heading for his capitol

YES!! This is fantastic! All units named!
Now there will be nothing to stop my Uber Field Omni General Von Klinkerhoven's Army Group "Bad Ass" 4th Panzer IV King Tiger Mark 3 from sweeping the battlefield clean of Joe's Wussy 89th Spearman Battalion

Thanks Mike Breitkreutz
Like AdmiralPJ already asked, I too have just a question: it will work the same that current "elite unit making Leader" but at the moment you build the unit, or do you have a pre-made default name (as for Leader himself) that we can rename any moment as it happen today for cities?

If I can name every single unit, I will a) take a very long time every turn, b) go nuts trying to remeber if this is my 44th Mississippi Deathbringer Cavalry Division or 45th, c) run out of adjectives very quickly, d) have trouble keeping track of my GL making units, since they are named too.
It will be helped a little by being able to tell cities to send troops to a place automatically.
