From here on down may be 'nice' places to live, but really, does anyone have any desire to live in China or Peru or Vietnam or somethn? That is one major flawin this ranking system, they didnt seem to take into account the conditions of the country in which a city is located, among other factors.
I mean, I live in San Antonio, a pretty crappy place - poor, high crime rate, fat (i think we were rated the 3rd fattest city in the US, after Philodelphia and some other, but i dont recall), etc, etc, but I would much rather live here than any place in Vietnam or.... oh ..... my .... god... how da hell did this happen?!?!?!

I'd agree that Madrid was much more livable than New York...until I learned a few things this week.
Madrid now can go to where the sun doesn't shine, AFAIK.

Out of what, like 1 billion cities in the world? In that aspect 16 and 34 is statistically insignificant.

Just because you can't admit it does mean it isn't true .

1 Billion cities in the world?
Come on Imran, I realize you're in law but surely you have the logic and math skills to laugh at that number?

Um... it was an exaggeration, I did say 'like 1 billion'. I'm sorry, I didn't realize you never exaggerate numbers, Windows boy .
The fact is that 16 and 34 related to all cities in the world is statisically insignificant. Of course it is closer to 1,000,000 cities in the world, just change the underlying fact.

So you don't take into account the differences of cities being in places like Uganda?
You'd think for being the wealthiest nation in the world more American cities would be up there.
The results would be a huge disappointment to me.

Why?
I should be dissapointed that our wealth is more spread around my country than being concentrated in certain areas like other countries?
That and the fact that we don't have universal health care, which is one of the factors which makes all US cities fall.
11 cities in the Top 50 is nothing to sneeze at.
And my city is tied for tops in the US.

I dunno.
Hong Kong ties with Madrid, yet it sucks pretty bad. What's more, Tokyo sucks even worse, but it ranks up high.

If you got the money, you can live like kings in any city. While Vancouver is a very nice city, there's a pretty nasty downtown area. So I don't know from what viewpoint did CNN evaluate the cities.

Yeah, exactly. I don't take the list very seriously because I was seriously unimpressed with downtown Vancouver. Maybe it's far nicer outside of downtown...

Obviously my #1 factors (cosmopolitan atmosphere, variety of small quirky shops, nightlife) are not factored in or Oslo would never rate that high.

doesn't work that way. it's not a study of the 150 best cities in the world, it's a study of 150 important cities in the world. Port Moresby isn't the 150th best city in the world, it's just the worst city of those that have been studied.

Hey do you know how many pakistanis there are in Oslo? Lots of small quirky shops too, nightlife? good but extremely expensive if you're not a teetotaller.
But seriously, if Oslo is #8, then the rest of the world must really suck.

I spent three days scooting the length and breath of Oslo city centre looking for one, a single, independant record shop, of the kind there are probably 60-70 of in central stockholm, perhaps half that in Helsinki. In both places finding one is a doddle. Nothing, nothing whatsoever. Where do the cool bohemian norwegians hang out?
