How do you trade workers?
Question: What do you need to be able to trade workers?

Nothing special. If AI civs have workers in their capitol, they will be willing to sell them to you. The same goes for you.

Can you only trade to a civ its own workers that you have captured, or can you trade any worker (either your own or from a third party civ)?

Any worker, but it's impossible to tell the difference in the diplomacy screen. It doesn't show the original nationality of the workers.

Kampus majore, perhaps next time you should consider consulting the manual as well and not just the Civilopedia.

Workers: Any Worker currently in your cpital city can be offered for trade. The same goes for workers in your rival's capital. A traded Worker retains its nationality, just like a captured one.
- Chapter 13: Diplomacy and Trade, p. 146

Emphasis mine (had to rub it in).

If you want to trade workers of a specific nationality, just make sure that those are the only ones in your capitol. (Foreign workers' nationalities really should appear in negotiations, though. In fact, I think this may be a bug.)

Hrm that's really odd. I thought the same thing and tried to give a ton of workers to Japan, but they didn't show up in the diplomacy screen. I'm POSITIVE they were in my capital, and I'm POSITIVE I had a mix of workers to offer. I had like 70 workers in my capital at the time. Am I missing something? He and I both had the ability to trade everything else too.

If the trade advisor shows a trade route with Japan, that should do it. Maybe you can't give them, where they available if you offer to trade them as in what will you give for ....?

It was yesterday when I bought a worker from the french and after I bought it, it appeared in my capitol.
I sold it in the same turn to the english (I wanted them to fight each other ). I was able to do the trade without a problem.

I succesed in trading workers in many other games, without problems.

I clearly remember though that I tried once to sell workers and even though they were in my capitol, they didn't show up in the negotiation table, just like in your case. I have no idea what was the difference between the 2 situations.

Haven't read the manual since november 2001! So you could say RTFM, but I would say FY!

And since there have been lots of patches one could wonder if it is still reliable what's in the manual....

I traded workers with civs that were on different continents. I had a few cities on their continent, but our capitols weren't on the same land mass.

Weird. I guess it's because I didn't have any cities on their island at all, and they didn't have any on my continent.

There's no logic in not being able to trade workers when you are not on the same continent. It is true that workers can't be airlifted (why is beyond me), but trading civs are more often linked through harbors, not airports. So what's the probem in putting those damn workers in a boat and sending them across the ocean?
